Nice piece, and well thought-out.
I think there are two competing ideas in play for this. The original glow puck was very much a product of its age. As you mentioned, the rise of HDTV changed hockey for the better. At the time, casual fans were watching on SDTVs, and there were new markets coming in who were not used to tracking pucks. I will say it appealed to my mom in the '90s (she doesn't watch hockey), but she raves about it to this day. I don't need or want a trail.
This is a long-winded way of saying that this technology was never supposed to be for us; it's for the new or casual fan. That's Bettman all over. He cares more about gaining new fans - which at times - alienates old fans.
The tracking technology i assume is trying to appeal to stats people and the incoming roll out of legalized gambling. The more data, the more people can bet on it, and the more people watch.
So really, imo, none of these technologies are for you, because the league doesn't care about you. You're already a fan
So this is all classic Bettman |

The All-Star game is (frank)ing stupid.
And adding women to an All-Star competition for an all male sport is (frank)ing dumb and a shameless appeal to the "diversity and inclusion" half-wits. - feetontheair22
1000% agreed on the first part
adding women to the All-star game would make it a lot better than the poop show that game was yesterday, what a waste of everyones time. Lets see an all star women team versus the boys... 5 on 4 Women Vs Men |

It would be fun to a losers' bracket game where each team had an NWHL all-star on it imo. 4-on-4 with one woman. Men vs Women would be a poop show. Women's league are non-hitting but that shouldn't be a problem in an all-star game |

I will say as a 13 year old when the glowing puck made it's mark, I didn't hate it.
I hated the "vapor trail" on shots but I didn't hate the glow puck.
As you said in your rant the glow puck was years ahead of the technology game. Which is probably why it didn't work.
However 20 years later with the major advances in technology we are still at a point where the casual viewers have a hard time tracking the puck in this fast paced game. You can watch a game from the mid nineties and watch a game today and it would still look the same.
This is where the NHL is behind the other major sports.
The NFL has the yellow first down marker, the blue line of scrimmage, and the sky track camera on Prime Time television games which gives viewers a better watching experience.
MLB has the strike zone, the batters hot and cold boxes in the strike zone, and the MPH of the pitchers pitches.
I can't speak for the NBA because I don't watch it, but I can say the only thing the NHL has is the scoreboard and the time remaining. They need to come up with a way to improve the TV experience for the casual fans.
Us hardcore fans will watch no matter what. It is Bettman's job to grow the game and increase exposure. I will not fault him for trying anything new. |

points taken and I think wyshynski pointed out that those colored nfl lines were a result of the glow-puck...I don't mind them although I could easily live without them and it's interesting that you noted the mlb strike zone...this is the first season that I've really begun to hate those boxes... |

Ya would be funny seeing the boys balancing not getting beat by the girls while at the same time appearing not to beat up a girl. Your right though the game is ridiculous. playing by those rules how does the Atlantic division lose with all that fire power. |

Hockey is the most difficult sport to watch on TV as a casual fan.
They have to come up with a way to improve the experience.
There should be a lot of trial and error in it.
Remember when the Sabres painted the ice blue for a AHL game during the lockout?
It was to see what it would look like for TV.
There needs to be more of that type of stuff IMO |

For a game that is 3 on 3 each team should play 4 on 4 with one of those 4 being a Woman.
A team with all women would get beat by a team of all men with or without checking. But since this is an exhibition and nobody cares put 2 women on each team. |

This is so true. There are a lot of reasons as to why, but even I have a hard time watching any games that don't involve the Sabres. |

Lets' go one step further and let each team have a pee-wee player
an AHL player
a para-Hockey player
and a retired player |
