Really?
That’s kind of surprising to me
Regardless...
even if he works out great for them,
It’s a 1.5year timeline for them to get the most out of him
The way they’ve been doing business,
I’m guessing they let him walk as a UFA after next season - jdfitz77
If they were gonna spend a first, they may as well have really committed to a bona fide top pair guy like OEL, even if it meant losing a guy like Marner. They middled it imo with a first for a guy like Muzzin |

Agreed
Works out better for us though imo |

I agree
And then Muzzin probably walks when his deal is up
Leafs are making some curious moves imo
This one seems especially short sighted,
unless they’re thinking they can extend him?
But with the term & Cap Hit he’ll likely demand,
I just don’t see how they can do it
Not unless they trade Nylander - jdfitz77
Marleau and Horton are off the books when Muzzin is up. |

I still think they (frank)ed themselves by signing JT. It all works out if they win the cup this year, but by year four of JT at $11m+ that's gonna be brutal. Now they're compounding that, because they refuse to make a tough decision to move one of their offensive players for a true top pair guy. |

So that is the thinking, Nylander is all but gone with Matthews and Marner likely to cost them what, $20-$24m next year!
Love to see him poopting the bed so it somewhat deflates his value!

Sounds good, but who's selling that caliber of player right now? OEL's extension kicks in next season, they aren't moving him.
They paid a fair price to rent Muzzin. It make sense for them.

Muzzin is a rental for this year, and this year only. I'm not sure that's the strategy I would go for, but there have been much, much worse made by teams farther down the standings. |

Not so sure. Muzzin said he rooted for leafs as a kid, so who knows. But he will want some coin.
Just heard Sabres are talking with Flyers about Coutuier, Provorov and Ghost. |

I think anytime you get a superstar for free it’s a win, but it’s possible they shortened their window |

They're going to trade him in the offseason? He has one year left after this year. |

Imo it makes (made) more sense for them to shoot higher, spend more and commit to the cup this year, because their window is shorter than those inside of leafland may believe |

Whoops. I thought I read he was a UFA after this year, though trading him isn't out of the question either, albeit for less than they gave up for him.
Also, the notion that the Leafs are utterly screwed is a overstated. If the last 14 years have taught us anything is that the salary cap is anything but air tight. |

Not sure. Depends what he asks for I suppose. Gardiner is most likely gone after this year as well. Leafs shipped a first, a 3rd line winger with some grit and a project dman for 2 playoff appearances of Muzzin. A lot of people think Muzzin is a rental.
They needed to upgrade the defense, and did that by not giving up too much, along with a 1st round pick.
Should be interesting to see what other moves Dubas makes |

He's a superstar now, but I have major reservations about his staying power. If they win the cup this year or next, it's a win, no doubt, but they still need to make structural changes if they miss on this 2 year window |

The Flyers are open for business for anyone not named Giroux and Hart
There is a deal to be made there I think.
If Muzzin costs a first a prospect and a 3rd line winger
Coutuier would be a 1st, Sobotka, and Malone?
But seriously he would cost a 1st, Guhle and Nylander most likely |
