The other thing. Instead of Canada and the united states woman's hockey team ONLY having each other to beat up on. They d have to unite against a common enemy Lol the men. Could you image say the NHL down a goal to the women and they feel their pride kick in and have to really rip a shot past one of the women's goalies. sorry im a bit sick i find that funny. realistically they d have to mix the girls in. and God knows probably would be a better game cause at least the girls try. and this event would be no different.

The NHL is going to end up playing a major role when the 2 Women's Leagues merge. If they want to expand the game and get more coverage for the women's game why not start at the All-Star game?

I don't watch the All-Star game, but I would if they had the women in there. My oldest girl who is 5 was amazing watching Coyne skate in the skills competition. The next morning at practice she skated her little heart out because she wanted to be as fast as her.

As a father of 2 girls I appreciate what the women did to get paid accordingly during training for the Olympics.

As a ref who has got to ref games with the best women's players in the world, I would like to see more exposure for them other than every 4 years.

No, no there isn't and that's why the exposure for them is important.

There are 2 women's leagues in North America. The CWHL and the NWHL.

They have different business models and they share the same talent pool of talent. It is up to each player to decide which league they think is best to play for.

The NHL has stated they won't get involved until the two leagues decide to merge and how they are going to do that.

I will say as a 13 year old when the glowing puck made it's mark, I didn't hate it.

I hated the "vapor trail" on shots but I didn't hate the glow puck.

As you said in your rant the glow puck was years ahead of the technology game. Which is probably why it didn't work.

However 20 years later with the major advances in technology we are still at a point where the casual viewers have a hard time tracking the puck in this fast paced game. You can watch a game from the mid nineties and watch a game today and it would still look the same.

This is where the NHL is behind the other major sports.

The NFL has the yellow first down marker, the blue line of scrimmage, and the sky track camera on Prime Time television games which gives viewers a better watching experience.

MLB has the strike zone, the batters hot and cold boxes in the strike zone, and the MPH of the pitchers pitches.

I can't speak for the NBA because I don't watch it, but I can say the only thing the NHL has is the scoreboard and the time remaining. They need to come up with a way to improve the TV experience for the casual fans.

Us hardcore fans will watch no matter what. It is Bettman's job to grow the game and increase exposure. I will not fault him for trying anything new.

Maybe there’s a way to illuminate the puck more clearly. Trails of where it has been don’t help anyone to know where it is now.

And the player ID boxes clutter the screen to a point where you can’t follow the game action, for the sake of things like age and current MPH???

No me gusta. It doesn’t help the game. Find something that does, and I’m all for it.

Yeah, agreed on all counts. My sister played hockey her whole life (until concussions ended it for her). When we played roller hockey in the basement growing up, we plastered the walls with our favorite players. In addition to the NHL, there were pictures of Wickenheiser and Granato. It would be cool if the NHL can incorporate the women in more.

Hockey is the most difficult sport to watch on TV as a casual fan.

They have to come up with a way to improve the experience.

There should be a lot of trial and error in it.

Remember when the Sabres painted the ice blue for a AHL game during the lockout?

It was to see what it would look like for TV.

I basically had planned to say the same thing. Bettman most likely told the owners he could turn hockey in to basketball on ice and now he's trying to rely on gimmicks to get it there....and its never going to get there. He has grown the game, but it's never going to compete with all the leagues you mentioned above, and it shouldn't have to. Baseballs are almost exactly the same size (in diameter) and played on a way larger filed, a golf ball is even smaller and on an even larger field. Neither of those 2 sports need to rely on gimmicks because their fan base is waht it is and thats all its ever going to be. Soccer is boring as fvck, and its the most popular sport in the world. Time for Bettman and the owners to deal with what they have rather than let greed fuel stupid ideas that dont stick.

Pach is definitely one of the best bloggers on this site. While obviously a supporter of the Sabres, he offers a very balanced perspective on both the Sabres and other teams and players through-out the league. He ain't no homer like Garf.

Watching the NHL All Star game yesterday was almost sickening. It took me back to the mid 1990's Fox crap that was on the tele. The actual 3 on 3 games were atrocious. No intensity and no one cared. Maybe the fans at the game actually liked it?
