For the first time I don’t have the “we can achieve anything” feeling with this team. The potential is still there obviously but with how below average Geno and Brass have been this year I’m starting towards cutting Brass for a 2nd if we can. If we could get Tanev and a 4th back and just let Sheahan and Blueger play center maybe that’s the best course of action. What do you guys think? |

It would be nice if tanev had another year his speed would go good in the bottom 6, then ya for sure, but I'd rather pray brassard finds another gear I think |

Definitely should trade Brass if we get a fair offer. Not dumping him for a crap return if teams go the low ball route. I think the Pens need a couple of younger hungry players so I'd be cautious about adding any 30+ players with term.
This is the first time where I feel like Geno and Kessel might not be a good fit going forward. If Geno is truly declining, they should look at doing a bit of a remodel which would involve getting younger. My dream would be to add Stone if he makes it to FA.
So yes.... I'm not sold on this team as constructed and I'm not sure tinkering is going to fix them this year. If Geno doesn't figure things out, we have no chance. His 5v5 play makes the 3C problem look small. I'm holding out hope that Schultz will help that 2nd line significantly.

I picked Tanev because I think he’s an obvious candidate to get priced out of WPG on his new deal. Idk if they’d send one of their rfa’s, I doubt it unless it’s closer to a one for one |

I just feel like if he hasn’t decided to bear down and tighten things up by now then I don’t think he will, not this season, not unless he gets rejuvenated with a new winger. Maybe that’s the real value of getting a guy like Ferland. I still think Simon-Geno-Horny was a good combination that should’ve been instantly reunited upon his return. Bad coaching imo |

Ahhhh you said Trade Malkin....Ban for you!
Well they cant ride Malkin and Crosby forever like what the Wings did with Dats and Z.
The goal is to make the playoffs. Teams dont make money unless they are playoff bound so I think hte Pens will do whatever it takes. But they do need to get younger. I was hoping for Domi. |

When Geno gets out his rut and starts tearing poop up again, how quickly are you going to reneg in this? |

Whoa now. He didn’t actually said “let’s trade Malkin” he was just saying he thinks we need to make adjustments and that adjustment is infusing youth into the lineup. I agree with that assessment. I’m definitely not the biggest Kessel fan on this site, but I know his value. I definitely want to get Phil a new playmaking center
I really liked Simon-Malkin-Hornqvist when they were together before. I would imagine if someone looked at their time together relative to how Malkin has played away from Hornqvist I think there would be an impactful difference. Did Pearson get time with 71&72 for a bit? I feel like that line also played well together? |

He has 53 points in 49 games and has 4 points in his last 5. That’s declining nowadays? Jesus Christ people have stupid expectations. |

Let’s not forget that Sid was off not all that long ago and we were all discussing what our options were. I’m sure we can rejuvenate Malkin. RW has done blogs in the past noting that this time would come where we would need to insulate our studs. We’ve insulated Sid with Jake. It definitely appears to be Malkin’s time and Phil doesn’t look like he’s going to be that guy. So the biggest priorities, for me, is a new 3C (I’m all for the Spezza experiment) and somehow rejuvenating Geno |
|
|
|
I don’t know if Geno retires a Pen, it’s way too soon to discuss that imo and I think we need to ride this out longer before anyone discusses trading him
Side note: I think we lose Ruhwedel for nothing this summer |

The offensive production is still there, but I don’t think it’s normal to watch him play and pretend like he looks his normal self out there |

As a Jets fan I just wanted to chime in and say congrats! It’s rare you can go on another teams board in here when they are discussing trade options with your team and read mostly reasonable offers and discussions.
For the record, personally I don’t want to move Perreault, I think his possession numbers and what he does for teammates makes his 4 mil salary totally worth it. I’m not a huge Brassard fan but also don’t want to sell the farm for some of the other big names available as reantals. So if the Jets really want him I’m on board with either Appleton or Tanev plus a 4th rounder (possibly a third) if that would work? |

Are their owners committed or are they cheap? Just curious.
I like the Jets they have a cool team. |

No... I would never trade Geno. I was inferring trading Kessel if we could somehow pick up Mark Stone in free agency. Considering the reaction, I guess I should have been more clear. If we're gonna get Stone, Kessel would have to go. I love Phil, but I'd sacrifice him to get Stone.
I do think they could extend their window if they added some youth. 3 players I would never trade are Sid, Geno and Letang. Probably add Guentzal to the list too. |

Two things.... All I've heard from RW for several years now is how players decline after 30. Well... Geno has 3 5v5 goals since October. Is that a decline or an anomaly? I don't have an answer for that.
Again.... Don't want to trade Geno. I just want to get some youth on the roster. |

While I agree that players generally decline after 30, I don’t believe Geno is on that steep decline just yet. I had thought you meant to trade Geno for pieces to retool. My misunderstanding. I do agree that building around him with youth and skill is ideal. I just don’t know if GMJR is the guy to do that given his last few years of moves.
To be honest Sid and Geno are both probably on the decline, but just because players are declining doesn’t mean you have to move them, it just means you have to get creative with how you build your team and can’t rely on them being the two headed monster anymore.
Issues with Geno on the short term? Yeah for sure.
Issues with Geno in the long term? Doubtful.
Ride that contract out and let Sid, Geno, Letang all retire and hang those (frank)ing digits in the rafters next to 66.

This. I am cool with not winning another Cup in this era of Penguins Hockey if I never have to see at least Crosby and Malkin in another sweater. Would be thankful if Letang was included in this as well.
That being said, we still have all the pieces there to compete for the next couple of years and I will be pissed off if Rutherford piss our chances to contend away with more dumbass moves. |

Yes... They're both declining a bit, but I agree it's not a steep decline. I was only suggesting they "remodel" the supporting cast in the off season. Like I said, I love Phil, but he's star player I'd move to bring in younger skill.
