Didnt they just trade their first round pick and two prospects for a player that is there for two years. - ImThatGuy
Yes that’s not what the post was about.
And again.....The Leafs are contenders NOW.
We aren’t.
Ask me if I’d trade our 2021 pick when we’re 2nd in the division |

I was all aboard the Duchene bandwagon until i did some digging.
Stay far far away from him.
Only a 60+ point player twice in his career, in contract years.
Contract year and lighting it up (Cough Stafford cough)
Who ever signs Duch to that 9MM a year contract is going to regret it. |

SO again, they are doing both wanting to acquire young talent cost controlled through the draft and improve their roster at the same time to solidify their team.
Weird its like several of us have been saying this is what the Sabres should do.
Minus the Leafs dont have a 1st rd pick after trading their own. and I assume will trade more picks, so it kind of contradicts building the system. |

Just a guess but I say we trade Beaulieau, Pommer and possibly Scandella and/or Slobotka at the deadline. - mhp
Careful there! And not suggesting you were guilty, because you generally are non-critical of other posters...but...
A month - 6 weeks ago I posted that JBotts should be selling those 4 and possibly more as my strategy during this Year of Transition and was roundly ridiculed for suggesting anyone would want Pommer and that Botts would NEVER trade his good friend in Pommer.
Funny how that has now changed.

They. Are. A. Contender. Now.
When did they trade their 1st 2-3 years ago besides Andersen and that was the last pick in round one, and the trade has been criticized (And it was a pick they got for Kessel)
Marner
Matthews
Kadri
Nylander
Rielly
Literally their entire core besides Tavares who they got for free were first round picks of their own |

They're doing all three. They also signed Marleau and Tavares as FA, and traded first and second rounders to get Anderson.
It's true that the Leafs believe they are closer to the cup than we think we are. But it isn't because of their low end guys - it's in spite of them. The Leafs believe they are closer to the Cup because they have a broader spectrum of high end talent, acquired in a variety of ways over the years. |

Yea when you draft Kadri, Reilly, Matthews, Marner, Johnsson, Brown, Hyman, Dermott, Nylander and luckily sign Tavares, and you are a solidified cup contender, moving a first rounder and two prospects to have a better chance to win this year and next year makes sense. The Leafs know they have to win a cup this year or within the next couple years or they’ll have to work some magic to fill out depth roles as they have nothing coming up through the ranks. The Sabres are easily 5 players away from being the Leafs. So keep the picks and draft and once we are on a cup contender level 2 years from now than you can trade the first to put you over the top. |

It's a good thing the Sabres have three first round picks this year.
Why would a team ever trade a first round pick, they are guaranteed to get the above. |

EDIT: I'm not suggesting we should be using all the picks in trades all the time. But prudent use of picks as currency is an effective way of building a team. |

The Sabres traded 3 future prospects for Skinner.

This team needs speed and skill, not size and grit.
The NHL is moving away from that, IF you are faster than them you are going to wear them down throughout the game.
Get more speed. - ImThatGuy
It isn't either or, neither nor though.
Both are required.
Playoffs are completelg different games where the physicality get turned up 5x.
Washington is a prime example and they intimidated a physically weaker team in The Lightning, especially Stamkos and Kucherov in the last 2 - 3 games of that series to become virtual no-shows. |

Just because Tim Murray was a (frank)ing idiot does not mean Botteril is going to do the same.

3rd and 4th lines maybe, but look at Vegas, they are the counterpoint, they just out skated every team and those big physical guys were left in the dust.
They had some grit, but it was 4th line guys. |

The type of player you’d get back for the SJ pick is not a guy who’s going to be a meaningful contributor for years to come.
Unless you are adding another 2-3 pieces on top of it.
Skinner is an outlier. He chose to come here and put Carolina in a bad spot.
I’d rather go for home runs than add a mediocre player who probably costs a good cap hit for the 27-30th pick |

So the Leafs are a couple years ahead then, are in fact contenders now when they traded their 1st.
Sabres are not contenders to be trading away a bevy of young assets. Judiciously sign a few FA's to get there...surely...then, when closer they too can sell off futures for the present push.

I’m still waiting to see what team is going to trade us a 23 year old stud for our first rounder. Homie mentioned Kempe yesterday and I like the idea of him but I think we could get him for Nylander, Guhle and a 2nd. |

70% chance that pick plays less than 50 games in the NHL and amounts to nothing.
Use it on a team that needs to clear cap space. (Tampa, Toronto)
People act like I am talking about trading that pick for Bobby Freaking Ryan.

The Sabres are in a different position now. Assuming they re-sign Skinner, they have him, Eichel, Dahlin and Reinhart in place. Add in Mitts and Ullmark if you want them for this.
When Murray went coocoo for cocoa puffs and traded for Kane, ROR and Lehner, we had Eichel and Reinhart. The Sabres are in a better position to add a player to help them, similar to what Pittsburgh did with fat man Phil |

So you'd rather trade three assets, two of which are going to see playing time next year. (1st rd, and 2 2nds)
rather than a 27 pick.
This makes zero sense.
