From my perspective, the answer to your question is that the best way to win a cup is to build a team that can compete year after year for as long as possible. Selling the farm to obtain high priced NHL talent now is a) GMTM's move that didn't work and b) certainly doesn't in any way guarantee a cup. Also, just by clearing Okposo off the cap doesn't ensure a "True NHL talent" would even sign here in his place.
That said, I would trade one of the firsts for talent now, just not all of them like you suggest. - Angler
meh, We have been drafting like shat for years... Eichel and Dahlin were no brainers, they don't count. when was the last really good player we drafted in the late first round or later, Pommer? Mogilny? I say buy the cup if you have to or at least try like hell...

The NHL would, because we'd be over the cap. It'd be almost 11M coming to the Sabres, with 2.4M going back. We have under 3M in cap space available.

You really want to criticize our drafting and ignore our UFA signings? Ironic.

I am criticizing the whole damn thing... We suck in all departments. Actually I take that back, we have won our fair share of BIG trades. Drury, Brier, Satan, Skinner, Lafontaine.. |

I don't buy the concept that the historical organization (i.e. the team name really) somehow has more say in how a team drafts than the guy actually pulling the trigger. In other words, you can't strap bad drafts from previous GM's on Botts.
I like Botts and of the four most important managerial positions in either buffalo sport (GM and Head Coach, bills and sabres) Botts is my favorite and I expect him to last longest. All this to say, I'll trust his drafting and plan. |

It's not that easy for me to re-set every time we have a GM and Coaching change. While I agree with you that Jbotts is not to blame for past drafts he is to blame for the majority of the current team less Okslowpoke..

nice blog
last night proved we would get bounced early if we made the playoffs
no grit - homiedclown
Funny you wrote that, in my post above about moves I want JBotts to make, My own critiquexwas that the team would be relatively soft...they do need to get a forward or two who likes the rough game and can hold his own...you know, like an EK9er |

I still think of this team as more GMTM than JB. That changes next season. He didn't leave an easy transition.

That Hasek guy and who could forget Dumont and Gilmour for Grosek and Rhett Warrener and a 5th rounder that turned into Miller for Mike Wilson |

I'm confident that Botts didn't insist on Bergy and Sobotka in that deal. Some things you just have to deal with while in transition.
And Skinner is a 'win'. |

No denying that we WIN most of our trades, I am main complaining about drafting. We draft like Shat, other then the no brainers.
