The same way Pitts and Chi did.
Keep the core together and flip other pieces for younger and cheaper talents plus picks.

- dbot

pitt and chicago did it because they had grandfathered contracts. every year those teams won they did it with zero cap space, now if crosby, keith, hossa, were on shorter term deals they wouldnt have been able to add the 1-2 extra guys they needed. it doesnt work the same anymore

wow

Leafs front office is full of "cap/contract specialists" and Matthews still went in dry on all of them

Kapanen won't be cheap. Andreas Johnsson will probably get a pretty decent raise. not really sure how they are going to fit it all in next year.

they're not - that's the beauty of it - good problems to have but still fun to laugh at - especially that Marleau contract!

When teams are in these sorts of cap problems, its when you kind of hope to swindle a deal like Leivo for Carcone. Look at nabbing Andreas Johnson or Kapanen for cheap. They won't be able to afford everyone.

Star players have the leverage. Matthews wasn't dumb like McDavid in doing his management a favour so they could waste cap on Kris Russell.

Depending on the next US TV deal and how much revenue Seattle generates, could be looking at a 95 million dollar cap when Petey's up for his 12.5-16%

They got 10 mil to resign Marner, Kap, Johnsson, Ozhiganov and Sparks and find replacements for Lindholm, Gardiner, Hainsey and Ennis.

If only 40 year old Marleau didnt cost 6+ next year - it would almost solve those problems.

It's bizarre that star RFA's have so much leverage because everyone knows that 90% of GM's in this league are too scared to offer sheet players.

Gardiner, Hainsey and Ennis were just stop gaps anyhow, I imagine they will let them walk, same with Oz.

Re-signing Marner, Kapanen, Johnsson with 10 mill is going to be near impossible though.

That's why I said replacements - those guys ideally would have to get replaced by players within the org for cost savings but that would more than likely mean "by a worse player"

I don't know about Gardiner being a stopgap lol, he's played for the Leafs his entire career and never averages less than 20 mins per game in a season.

He's a legit top 4 offensive dman, but they did upgrade with Muzzin.

my bad lol

I guess that's why they were the most aggressive team on Muzzin, Dubas knew he needed a top 4 dman signed through next year at a good cap hit because Gardiner is gone for sure.

Its only the elite ones that can step on the GMs balls and make them like it. When you're of the top 3 players on the roster the GM can't afford outside threats or going into a season without you.

Imagine JB strong arming Brock next year and Brock doesn't play ball and they're at a Nylander impasse. JB's the one taking a beating for it. But had that been the sitch with Baertschi then its the player who loses out.

Kapanen and Johnsson will get strong armed into cheapo deals. They'll find a way out of Zaitsev and grease some money at the edges with trickery and fill the holes with Sandin, Liljegrin, Moore, Bracco, etc.

I mean their options suck - they can replace Hainsey/Gardiner with ELC guys like Holl, Rosen or Liljegren (who blows BTW) or they could try to trade Kap or Johnsson and bring back a decent young D - but more than likely the guy they bring back is gonna have cap implications as well. So fawk the leafs and its fun to laugh at guys like Marleau/ZAitsev and fans that swore their contracts wouldn't be a problem.

maybe stop gap was the wrong word, maybe dispensable is a better word

I don't think they'll mind moving on from him. He's a poster child for their playoff failures.

Kap and John have every right to hold out like Nylander, Ritchie or Wood. I dont' see how they can 'move on" from Zaitsev contract - if we know him and his contract blow, then so does every other GM, why would anyone do Dubas a favor? Sandin isn't ready, Liljegren sucks and Moore/ Bracco are have played a combined 7 NHL games. A lot of what ifs

Wasn’t there talk that Marleaus contract was designed to make him easy to move next year?

It's not that tricky, you just add a pick/prospect for taking Marleau or Zaitsev off their hands.
The Coyote's GM comes to mind.

The Rangers are into that sort of thing too I bet.

The Leafs had to move Martin this summer and Lou couldn't wait to get his hands on a contract he signed in Toronto. Might do the same for Zaitsev. Edmonton is desperate for RHD. Florida could use an NHL caliber body on defence and Tallon loves long contracts to bad players. Buffalo might even have a spot.

If the price is cheap enough someone will hop on

Well that's good news on the Edler front.

I'm starting to think that Sven is dealing with some kind of chronic medical issue, seemed like Green knew a lot more than he let on in the pregame interview yesterday
