I don't disagree with you. I think for every single one of the reasons you mentioned that it makes the most sense for them to wait. However, when you see how skilled he is offensively I find it VERY hard to see the Hawks waiting to bring that level of skill to the team. I can already see their reasoning being that he can learn from two all time greats in Keith and Seabrook with Brookbank helping him understand the system and grow his defensive game more with the team while letting him unleash his offensive skill set with Kane.

Its more to do with age. He was just a few days from being eligible for this draft.

Wouldn't be the worse thing in the world for Boqvist to spend another season with London. For a few reasons. Expansion draft, RFA status, physical maturity and more time to hone his defensive game.
- Elbows15

ELC players are auto-protected in the expansion draft. It would help with keeping him on ELC longer and letting him develop physically more.

The only one I could see making sense is Mitchell IF he's willing to sign an ELC once their season is over with. I still think Beaudin is at least another year away, and I think they will let Boqvist take the same path that Joki did in Training Camp last year and surprise everyone to make the team (Boqvist almost did it last year with his play so imagine what another year should do for his confidence). Also, gotta keep in mind that Joki is very much likely to get the call back up at some point as well too.
- Savetheembers33

Good point. It will get even more crowded once Joki returns again. Do you think Dahlstrom is now a fixture on the back end? Do you think Forsling is dealt for a forward? Do you think KoekKoek ends up being the 7th D man?

No, they aren't. The criteria was 2 years or less of professional hockey.

Beaudin has already signed his ELC. So Rockford would be where he would go. Which he probably could use.

IIRC, Boqist has signed his ELC also but both are slide eligible. I think

- Elbows15

Yeah, Beaudin I see going the Rockford path for sure since he signed his ELC and I think would be done with juniors at that point. He's a solid prospect that looks to be a Top 4 type of guy. He doesn't have the flash that Boqvist has or the poise that Joki showed in all areas of his game that impressed the Hawks and forced them to decide to keep him on the NHL roster to start the year.

I think AEL_Fox and I have talked about the fact that we see some path where the integrate one of the Defensive guys every year...

18/19 - Joki
19/20 - Boqvist
20/21 - Beaudin/Mitchell
21/22 - Mitchell/Beaudin

Something to that effect with the current crop of Icehogs and College kids being sprinkled in (depending on trades of course)

Say the Hawks make a move for a forward at the deadline and are in the hunt the rest of the way/squeeze into a wild card spot. Do the Hawks bring one of Boqvist, Beaudin or Mitchell into the fold toward the end of the year when their respective seasons end?
- SoftServe

I'd guess not, because those guys probably don't have the experience or physical maturity to probably crack a lineup spot at this point. Not unless the Hawks start shipping out dmen to make some holes.

One consideration might be how has this path altered with the coaching change. Joki impressed Q, but JC cut his playing time and the Hawks ended up sending him to Rockford. We might find that one of these young guys fits in better with JC than they didn't with Q or vice versa. It could be that the next guy up is a Carlsson or Raddysh and the other guys end up in Rockford or Junior. My roundabout way to my point is, maybe training camp next fall will give us a fresh take on what future the Hawks see for some of the guys, now that the coaching staff has changed.

Expansion draft rules from when Vegas entered. I presume they are the same, but Vegas is totally exempt.

That's the million dollar question my friend. I think that's why the decided to send Joki down so they could decide if Koekkoek is a guy who's gonna stick with the team (at least for one more year), if Forsling can take that next step they think/thought he could, and is Dahlstrom an NHL D-Man. I think Dahlstrom has played himself into being at least a #6/7 D-Man on this team. Now they need to figure out what they having in KK and Forsling. I honestly, think that Forsling is going to be moved in a deal at some point with how many guys they have that they seem to really like. KK I could see going either way. Gonna be interesting to see how this team figures out its Defensive positioning going into next year with all the pieces they have to the puzzle and where they fit best.

Difference between Q and JC, Q punished guys to the teams detriment. One can argue he accelerated the decline of Keith, Seabrook and Hammer because of his decisions. And in the end, the last 2 plus years, what did that get Q and the team...a flat and uninspired team. The more Gus has been trusted, warts and all, the more of an upward trajectory the team is on. Irony.

JC way is how you build a cohesive room, not a club with unaccountable people in the Champagne room.

I like the current management style.

Dahlstrom looks good, idk about fixture, still a rookie. I'm not giving him up though.
Forsling shouldn't be dealt. Looked good after return from IR. I think him and Koekkoek will rotate to see what they have.
Koekkoek, he can walk. I'm okay with him now, but it's no great loss. Play and develop young guys.

I would agree with that. Seeing the team play almost a full season under JC and his system along with a Training Camp with the young D guys all together should give us an idea of where guys are gonna fit and what their timeline is going to be with the team. Also, who knows what happens with guys being traded or them signing someone in FA

Marner is gonna want close to the same as Matthews if not around the exact same amount as he's played better as we've all seen BUT, I forgot which show I was watching so forgive me, the host suggested that this will follow closely to what happened with Edmonton with McDavid and Draisaitl where McDavid got the mega deal and Draisaitl wanted close to the same, but they got him to settle for a few million less to as a "discount" to help the team.

Believe it or not, they way Agents and the NHLPA is pushing players to get the most money that they can, Matthews probably, if he wanted the money, could have gotten a deal for a higher AAV than McDavid did but decided to take "less" to help the team out.

- Savetheembers33

Actually getting $50 million up front is huge, he gets all $50 million in one lump sum. That's how they got Matthews to agree to that contract. I can't tell you what big deal it is to get all your money today instead of waiting 5 years to collect all of it. His $30 something million after taxes of course will begin producing money for him on day one. They might do the same thing for Marner, or might they trade Marner?

For giggles, say you call the Wild and offer AA in a trade. Who do you ask for back? Player or just picks?

I can't see them trading Marner with how well he's played. I could see them front loading the money the same way though to get him to want to sign a deal. What the AAV is gonna be is gonna be a huge deal because that will determine what the Leafs will have to do with the rest of the roster, and the other impending RFAs they have

Last I heard he continued where he left off with his Junior team and was playing really well. That and that he may have started to play his way into receiving an ELC this spring. That's about all I've heard. I'm sure someone has more that that however

Also to add, its not worth burning a year of their ELC for a few games this year.

Picked up where he left off in essence. He is basically a one man show on the Remparts this season. They aren't very good this year.
