I'm not saying he's going to blow it apart. I'm just saying comparing him to a Stetcher-like year is underselling what he's going to do.

I think he'll be in the conversation for the Calder. He'll have a similar impact to what Heiskanen is doing down in Dallas.

- NewYorkNuck

Stecher came out of college and was a smart player. He could also move the puck nicely in his first year. There was some people even saying in his first year that he was the best Dman on the Canucks.

He has had his bumps and is improving year to year. Lets leave the comparisons to that.

Hughes is a smart fast player but he doesn't have a hard shot . He will make lots of mistakes but he will grow out of them.

I find it comical, and comforting, that flatlanders think it rains 24/7 on the coast. If it rains hard for a week out of a month, in Victoria, it's a lot. It sprinkles for a couple hours a day and then it's cloudy or sunny.

The only months I don't golf, usually, are January and February, and I don't golf in the rain. January and February are too cold.

Sort of like West coast people think it's freezing cold and snows 24/7 in Manitoba?

Did you see I was laughing there? I'm not worried about what BC people think of MB weather. I have 30 plus family members in BC. They complain about the weather all the time. It's possible it's just my family.

Obviously it's not -40 for four months lol, but those cold spells are nasty. I worked for Shell Canada in Edmonton for 18 years, I know what both are like.

LOL

With 346.0 mm (13.62 in) of annual precipitation, Penticton is the fourth driest city in Canada. It averages 58.7 cm (23.1 in) of snowfall per year.

One player was undrafted, the other a highly touted 7OA pick. The only things they have in common are college and size.

Stecher:

Owns excellent puck-moving skills and passing ability. Is also mobile, so he can join the rush with aplomb. Can produce quality offensive numbers at lower levels. Needs to add more bulk to his 5-10 frame, since he is somewhat undersized for the National Hockey League level. Must prove himself as a capable defender in the pros.

Hughes:

exceptional skater, his mobility and offensive awareness are off the charts. Is always at his best whenever he has the puck on his stick. Can control the game from the back end and is a supreme power-play quarterback. Lacks optimum size for the blueline position at the National Hockey League level. At times, he can be guilty of being a little too aggressive on the ice (which can cause him to be out of position). Needs to get stronger.

I agree that like any rookie, they'll make mistakes. But as has been shown with EP, high-IQ players learn faster than others. Hughes is a very high-IQ player.

But, I guess we'll see when he's up after his season is done

That's not as much fun as looking out your window at sunshine and -40 degrees and thinking, "Is this the day my family dies because the plumber can't fix the heater?"
- RealityChecker

Flying east to west, looking out the window at the white tundra that’s the prairies and then you fly over one last mountain range and BOOM! World of green and blue. Life abounds, not locked away in some icecapped prison.
