It’s actually just pointing out how trading the low % picks and prospects for “NHL ready” or good players can net you zilch as well in the long term.
I have no interest in any short term fixes.
They want to get a 20-22 year old in that range, sure. Not a guy a few years away from UFA status. Not for 1st’s and prospects - sbroads24
We need to hit on some picks and upgrade the prospect pool. Why does everyone want to trade away our picks? Worse, why does anyone think JB would go that route? |

Keep it rolling, guys. I love all the prospect talk. Every year, there’s guys who rise and fall. It appeared the Isles were beneficiaries last year. Maybe in the same spots the Sabres will occupy this year. - PrinceChill
It's still a bit early but it will be interesting to see the mocks by the end of March. |

Nah.
Murray traded two NHL’ers. Myers and Stafford.
Bogo replaces Myers, Stafford could have been traded as a rental at any time
It meant literally nothing towards getting Eichel - sbroads24
How quick people forget.

24 year old top6 players are better than 18yr old busts
Can we avoid those busts & hot it big?
Of course that’s possible
But it’s not likely
At some point,
it’s just smart to take the sure thing over what could (or more likely couldn’t) be |

There have been some good conversations between Jeff Skinner’s camp and the Sabres but still obviously work to be done on an extension. But Feb 25 really not a factor since Skinner has a full no-move and certainly no indication he’d want to go anywhere.
So unlike the Stone/Duchene situation in Ottawa where the players are either signed or traded by Feb 25, the Skinner situation likely plays out differently. Both sides solely focused on getting an extension done and if it happens it happens, whether it’s before Feb 25 or not... |

If teams were in the position to trade that said player im sure Botts would be all over it. The odds of acquiring that player are just as high as us drafting that player in the middle of the first round and developing that player. Those kinds of trades are lateral moves (Domi for Gally, Drouin for Sergachev, Strome and Perlini for Schmaltz). Teams are looking to build around youth not trade it away. Draft, develop, sign a free agent or two and make the big trade (Kessel) when we are on the level of TBL/WIN/CAL/NSH/TOR. |

Horrible point
Obviously the convo of trading a pick only occurs if there’s a deal to be made
And we just traded for Skinner who was 26 and EVERYONE wants to extend
So yeah, it’s can (& does) happen
No one is saying to trade a 1st for Simmonds (maybe 1 guy) or someone in their 30s
The trade would OBVIOUSLY have to be for a good player who is in his mid20s or earlier |

Im a big Trouba fan. I knew what he was about before the game I saw live, but to me he was the most impressive player on the ice that day. Physical, can make a first pass, skates extremely well for his size, and most of all RHD. He would be the perfect partner for Dahlin. - Pegullaville
But i thought teams were “looking to build around youth, not trade it away”
So why even consider Trouba? |

If we can trade for another player who has a NMC that bends their respective team over the table by only waiving for one possible team that lowers the asking price then hey to each their own.
Skinner is a damn good player but without Eichel he'd be on the same level if not a tad below JVR, Pacioretty, Hoffman, and Evander Kane. E.Kane has 3 points less then skinner right now and their historical point totals are almost identical. |

1) He is a RFA at seasons end and
2) Hes requested trades out of Winnipeg before and purposely signed a one year deal for that very reason
3) Winnipeg is cap strapped so even if Trouba has a change of heart they will have to work some magic to figure out their cap situation so someone else will have to become available. |

But there is absolutely a right choice in this scenario.
And it’s the one that includes the better D man, good 3rd liner, promising young player and a 4th liner on pace for 18 goals (he’s shooting at a ridiculously high %)
As opposed to one lottery pick and Bogo. - sbroads24
Without getting into the balancing act that you're asking everyone to do (and recognizing that not everyone agrees with your evaluation of this particular trade), lets assume your right IN THIS SCENARIO.
It doesn't mean the scenario will repeat every time. And the graph shows the value of picks as determined by the data. They're not as valuable as you want us to believe by picking the one trade that you've made the centerpoint of your HB career. |

Let’s just say Skinner had this season with another team
He’s 26
Would you trade a 1st + for him?
I sure as sh!t would
No one is saying to trade a 1st for someone like Charlie Coyle |

I granted your premise. The Kane deal worked out better for WPG than it did for us.
Even if your premise is true, it doesn't mean that trading picks will be a bad outcome in every deal.
And your secondary premise, that we would acquire a rental or older vet for the picks is not what I have ever said. I'm looking for a young player with term in need of a change of scenery or better chemistry, or who will be sacrificed to cap issues
I don't know if those situations exist. But that's what I would hope to do with the picks. |

They both stink? You sure you watch hockey?
1 stinks and the other doesn’t. I’ll let you figure out who it is. - Jammerz04
I like the Coyle idea because while he's not a player you're going to start consistently in the D zone, he is a roughly 50/50 player on both ozone/dzone starts and Corsi. He would add a scoring dimension on the RW with Mittelstadt, while giving an option at C as well, especially in case of an injury.
The fact that there's no NMC and a relative bargain at $3.2 is nice. |

Meh
He’s a 3C imo
Hard pass if we need to trade a 1st for him

Can you guys believe the Sabres let Drury and Briere walk away for nothing?
And what were they thinking drafting Ric Seiling instead of Mike Bossy? |

Trouba has some control over his position just like Skinner did although not to the same extent. Trouba is a special case as he has requested trades before. I said in my previous post if we can find another team that may have their hands tied like Skinner had Carolina's then it could work. So indirectly I proved both of our points. Since you always bring up a certain age range to trade for and never any names (sans Couts which was always a pipedream) you're welcome. |

Trouba looked great in person.
Wonder if we trade a few picks at the draft and a young guy or 2? Winnipeg cant pay everyone. Not sure if they are taking the "tampa" discount to stay.
He would be a rfa?
What would the Sabres have to pay him? |

Because bringing up specific names just begs for ppl to say crap like “he was always a pipe dream”
Here’s the bottom line...
Don’t say we the odds of us trading for a good young player are slim,
then turn around and advocate for us to do so
It’s ridiculous
Can’t have it both ways
The whole point of ppl saying they’d move a 1st is CLEARLY in the case that it’s possible to make that type of trade
If it’s not, then we’d keep the picks
You’re welcome |
