Yeah, Trotz is probably having a huge positive effect, more than I ever expected before the season began. Going from 35.6 shots against to 30.6 is a pretty impressive improvement. If my math is correct then that's around 7% less in one year?
I don't know much about Lehner's mental health issues. If getting help with that has possibly helped him as a goaltender, well, not something I know about. Maybe this really will be him going forward then. If so, then good for him. - Thecakeisalie
Barry should go down being an all time great coach. He is that good. Isles fans for years were asking for a proven GM and coach and we finally have it. Barry is really the MVP of this team. |

Shocking! I'll take that under consideration. Maybe I can find some good mathematical formulas to run that will tell me if I should indeed, watch the games. I'll go look... - Thecakeisalie
You do realize I was talking about Islanders games right? Watching Islanders games before making judgements on the team. |

I'm sure you've never made a comment about another hockey team without first going and watching their previous dozen games to make sure you knew the full picture.
This is partly where stats are actually somewhat useful. I can go look and see that Patrick Kane is now in 2nd place for scoring and say, "Well, Kane seems to be having a good year, at least offensively, despite his team being pretty bad", without needing to go watch a bunch of Blackhawks games.
Just like I can see both of your goalies leading the whole league in save percentage and figure out by their career average that they are playing above their normal level. There are probably some other factors I'm not going to be aware of, such as Lehner's mental health status, but even the team playing better at defense is something I can pick up by seeing the huge improvement in shots against from this year compared to last (which admittedly is probably also a factor in those goalies having better numbers this year, I just doubt it's the only reason).
If I want the full story, sure, I should watch the games. That doesn't mean I can't gather any useful information from the stats. |

No, I didn't contradict myself at all. Life isn't so simple that there can only be one reason for a certain result. Sometimes there are multiple reasons why things occur.
Like for example, the Isles goalies this year might have better gaa and sv% because the team in front is playing better AND the goalies themselves are having career years. It doesn't have to be one or the other. It can be both.
In fact, I mentioned both those factors in my first post that you quoted. That the players and play style might also be a factor. You're acting like you pointed out something I missed, while I myself had already acknowledged that very thing. - Thecakeisalie
“I love that "Old man yells at cloud" meme. I don't care if it's been around forever and overused, I still get a chuckle every time I see it.
The Islanders are actually being propped up by 2 goalies playing far better than their career average, not just one. That's the really crazy part. One poop goalie playing the season of their life is lucky enough, but they have two doing it.
Lehner and Greiss both are 1st and 2nd in the NHL for goals against and save percentage, with 2.08 gaa for Lehner and 2.20 gaa for Griess right now. Their save percentages are .930 and .929 respectively.
Lehner hasn't had close to that low a gaa or high a save % since his early Ottawa days when he only played 5 and 12 games those seasons. His career save percentage is .917, which isn't terrible, but not nearly as good as his current league leading .930.
Greiss has played almost as many games as Lehner this year and his numbers are almost the same, despite having a career average of 2.62 gaa and .915 sv%.
So they've actually got two goalies playing far better than should be expected of them for 30 + games each. I'm sure it's been a great ride for Isles fans and if they're lucky, their two goalies might not fall back to earth until after this year's playoffs, but eventually, those goalies are going to regress back to their usual play. It's just a question of when. If those goalies stay hot though, and keep their confidence, who knows how far they could go this year?
Do I think either goalie is really that great? No. Eventually they'll return to normal. The question is how long they can keep up this current level of play though. “

What part of this post describes the coach and players helping the team and anyone besides goalies being contributing factors to the teams success? Stop with this life isn’t so simple mantra and the back peddling. It’s not like anyone can’t go back and copy and paste😂
Keep slapping James Tanner on the back for a job well done. 😂😂😂😂

Man I need to be specific with you, huh? "In fact, I mentioned both those factors in my first post that you quoted."
Obviously I was talking about the quote you had just quoted before, which was my first of today and my first on that page... Where I specifically say all of this:
Your team does deserve credit for reducing shots against. You've gone from 35.3 shots per game down to an average of 28.6, which certainly helps your goalie and especially impacts GAA. Save percentage, imo, is a better stat for telling us how well the goalie themselves are playing, as opposed to GAA which can be impacted a great deal by the rest of the team.
Note the parts like, "Your team deserves credit for reducing shots against".
It's true nothing about that was in my very first comment in this thread, on page 5, from yesterday. On there I didn't get into those details and merely pointed out that both of your goalies had far better numbers than their norm, which is totally true.
How terrible, it wasn't until my second post in here that I pointed out that there were other factors such as coaching or team defense that might be helping...
Honestly, I think I've been pretty respectful on here, doing things like agreeing your coach has had a bigger impact on your team than I expected, or saying I think even with your goalies playing at their average level you'd still be a playoff team, or that I was wrong thinking your team wouldn't be a playoff team before the season started, or mentioning I wasn't aware of Lehner's personal issues and how that might be the reason he's doing so well... I think you'd only be happy with someone drinking Isles Koolaid shouting, "Isles Da Best!" |

Maybe I should post that one now. It seems I've hurt someones feelings by having the audacity to agree with Tanner on something and slightly criticize their team by suggesting their goalies are playing at a level far above anything they've done before consistently. Maybe it's time for a tactical retreat.
Ooh, this one is new (to me at least), lets go for it.

Yeah I’m very upset. Devastated. Just pointing out you contradicted yourself which you did. No big deal just pointing it out. Move on don’t let it ruin your night. Life isn’t that simple. |

No I didn't.
I merely pointed out your goalies had higher than average numbers which were helping your team this year.
Then later on, trying to be a good sport, amended things and agreed there were probably other factors playing a part on your team's current performance.
I still think your goalies are playing above their real level, which I've never contradicted or changed. Unless you want to count me not knowing about Lehner's mental health issues and admitting that could be a factor...
It's like I said to you earlier, you seem to just want to argue. |

There’s nothing to argue and I’m not. You just can’t seem to handle being wrong which you are. You said something then contradicted yourself. You saying you did it to be a good sport doesn’t change that. Are you Tanner? There couldnt possibly be two of him. |

Hes changed a lot for both goalies less movement keeping it simple. Lehner said its sorta boring greiss was also very good 2 years ago and last year got killed by the isles no defense style/system. You know this but the leaf guy doesn't and I guess the stats dont reflect this either |
