Million dollar question. Who's the person(s) who can draw that out of the players? And should they need a coach to do that? - TheSabresTaco
I think a real part of this problem is that we're asking square pegs to go into round holes.
The players we have drafted over the last few years have been speedy, skilled guys, but not skilled and "heavy." We don't have a forward whose first instinct is to get into the crease and muck it up with a defender. They're all perimeter guys by nature.
So to ask how to draw it out of them asks how do we get them to play a style different than what brought them into the league to begin with.
It's a drafting thing. Yes we need speed and skill. But there has to be speed and skill combined with a bit of "nasty" in the lineup, too.
EDIT: This idea plagiarized from PHam yesterday. Just because it's PHam doesn't mean its wrong. |

Same problem with the Bill's turnover in the front office.
Draft a 3-4 guy
2 years later they are playing a 4-3 defense

There's a shortage of the players you describe in the NHL, and the Sabres don't really have one. Jeff Skinner, sorta. Zach Bogosian (say what you will) plays like this, without the offensive skill. Finding skill, speed and physicality is a rare breed of player. Brad Marchand, Chris Kreider, Gabe Landeskog, Jamie Benn, Filip Forsberg, Taylor Hall, Alex Ovechkin all at varying skill sets blend these 3 traits, and are coincidentally some of the game's best players.
To round back to yours and PHam's sentiment, you are correct. We must find this, most likely, in the draft. Imagine finding one of these skill-power wingers (See: Matthew Boldy, ranked 8 by Sportnet) |

And the Sabres put him on a plane to NJ. He has to consider retirement at this point. The recapture penalty isn't good though. - mhp
LTIR him for the remainder of the contract.
Insurance picks up the payment.
Team and player make out.
He hopefully leads a healthy and happy life with the family. Which I think is all we want for the guy. |

Million dollar question. Who's the person(s) who can draw that out of the players? And should they need a coach to do that? - TheSabresTaco
I remember the 90's when Teddy was coaching, we had a some stars but mostly a bunch of cast offs, but they made it miserable for the other team to play against.
But to answer your question, I will always vote for a disciplinarian coach over a "players coach" Remember most of these guys are still kids or very young men, the leash has to be short... |

I (frank)ing despise how they have done this. Most recently, use two 2nds on Reggie Ragland, trade him for 1 4th two years later. |

I don't think it's about heart, it's just that this team isn't very good. Sobotka can't score because he sucks not because he isn't trying |

In the off-season you can go 10% above the cap but you must be cap compliant for the start of the season.
Can’t LTIR a player until the season starts but then his cap hit doesn’t count.
A team can select 3 contracts per year to insure.
Team doesn’t have to pay, player gets his money, and hopefully enjoys his family. |
