In the off-season you can go 10% above the cap but you must be cap compliant for the start of the season.

Can’t LTIR a player until the season starts but then his cap hit doesn’t count.

A team can select 3 contracts per year to insure.

Team doesn’t have to pay, player gets his money, and hopefully enjoys his family.

I don't study this stuff very carefully and I don't pretend to know anything about it other than from reading the link Homie posted but that link describes something very different.

This team lacks Heart and A Backbone pretty hard live without either.

Good thing we have a former "cap manager" as a GM. 😉

I mentioned how soft we were going to be prior to the season.

The hockeybuzz response:

We have bogo
Nhl isnt the 90's anymore

We let tockett sign in az
Boogie man in Florida

We sign this softest player in Sabres team history as our coach. What did people expect?

If I read it properly it says a team can use LTIR as a mechanism to exceed the Cap but the injured players salary continues to count against the cap, and the relief is only available for the amount by which the injured player's salary contributes to the excess.

So, using data from CapFriendly, the Sabres cap hit is ~$74.4M with $3.2M of cap space. Okposo carries a Cap hit (I think) of $6.0M (there's crap in there I don't understand about buried hit and accumulated hit and other stuff like that).

So - for the sake of simplicity - if those figures were to remain constant, if Okposo goes on LTIR, $3.2M of his salary continues to count against the cap hit, but $2.8M is free to bring in a replacement.

SUMMARY: We don't get to use the full $6M of KO's cap hit, only the portion of the $6M that exceeds our available cap space.

If I'm reading the link properly.

Use Nathan Horton, Hossa, and Bolland as examples.

They’re on IR, their cap hit counts but you can use that money to exceed the cap until the player is healthy to play.

They’re never playing again so the teams get the full relief.

Only to the extent that the LTIR player's Hit makes the team exceed the cap. If the team has room on the cap the LTIR player's hit still counts against the Cap.

So in Okposo's case, "the full relief" is 2.8M not 6M.

If I'm looking at it right, the recapture penalty on Okposo would be $3, $3, $4 and $2. Not sure what LTIR would be. Maybe somebody knows.
- mhp

That's too high. They've had a 4m cap benefit. With 4 remaining years, it's a 1m hit for 4 years.

LTIR is significantly more complicated. The most annoying side effect of going over the cap and utilizing the LTIR pool is that ELC bonuses roll into the following season. I don't know all of Dahlin bonuses, but I'd have to think he's hitting most of the goals.

Eichel isn’t a top 25 player, Tatar sucks, Reinhart is a stud who is more noticeable on the ice then Eichel. Can someone check if Hellen Keller has an uncle whose friend works for the Sabres ?
