Can't see Marleau passing up $6.2. - mohel
Actually 4.2 but yeah. |

Lol no, you're not understanding my point.
When Kane was putting up his monster 100+ point seasons, like he is now, if Toews also had that level of production he would've been paid more than Kane.
However so much emphasis is put on the financial value of a two-way center that Toews and Kane are paid the same despite Kane having nearly 200 more points over the same time frame.
The Leafs situation is different. Matthews actually (the two-way center with more value) actually still has a higher PPG (career 0.98 vs 0.91). So Matthews makes more than Marner. - Blazed
Look, I'm kinda rooting for the Leafs to win the Cup - O6 team that hasn't won in forever, I like Babcock (now that he's not with Detroit), I enjoy watching the Leafs play with all the speed and young guns - plus I don't really have any other rooting interests considering my Hawks won't be there - so I hope you guys win it this year because I'm telling you you will need that big parade to help soothe the Cap monster that will be lurking at your door.

Stan’s big trade deadline acquisition: Josh Ho-Sang. - DarthKane

Well if we are complaining about our bad defense and no way it is built for the playoffs, the Leafs is not much better IMO. They have to get thru Boston and then most likely Tampa to get to the finals of the division, so Marleau is most likely not retiring this year with a Cup

Well, Kane has actually only had 1 100+ season. Fine, Marner at 10.5 works for me too. - Elbows15
Should we revisit this in what 3 weeks?
Toews (0.86ppg career)
Kane (1.04ppg career)
Matthews (0.98ppg career)
Marner (0.91ppg career)
Not the same scenario. Well see how hard Marner's agent wants to go. Even at 10.5 I can live with that because > Jack Eichel. |

They won the first Cup while still on their ELCs. The next 2 on their 2nd contract.
Though both of their extensions were signed during Cup seasons. Their extension played a part in the purge for sure. Both of them hitting performance bonuses on their ELC was also a factor.
Plus, Tallon screwing up the QO to some players made them UFA and the Hawks signed them higher than they would have had to if they were RFAs. - Elbows15
So they are going down a similar path. They unfortunately don't have the horses on the back end like we did.
I agree Tallon is horrible with the check book |

Re: Darth Kane suggests Bowman could acquire NYI Josh Ho Sang.
At least Rockford Icehogs would field a stronger lineup! They might win a couple rounds in playoffs.
Maybe trade Forsberg straight up |

Leafs will be fine. Having a talented roster isn't really cap hell. Dubas insulated himself with two cap guys as AGM. Brandon Pridham was a contributor to the curent CBA and worked for NHL central office. Laurence Gilman is a JD, he was a contributor the Vegas NHL expansion.
They are already shifting the high end contract game with Tavares and Matthews contracts coming in at 92-93% bonuses (lockout/buyout proof, tax friendly) taking full advantage of their financial resources.
Marner will sign a deal that works for both sides. Kapanen and Johnsson will take bridge deals. Both are available for trade as well for top 4 D.
Gardiner and Hainsey free up cap this year. Marleau and Horton the season following. The Leafs have used Horton's cap space in the off-season previously and will likely continue to do so.
Sparks is an RFA, he will not command much money. The Marlies is continue to stock cheap depth players for next season. Calle Rosen is a nearly PPG defensemen this year signed for 2 more years at 750K.
Some talent (Gardiner) will walk out the door yes, but overall the core should see a decade of opportunity similar to the Pens. I'm not saying the Leafs will win Cups, but the Crosby-Malkin era essentially from 06-07 to current has been a contender threat nearly every year. No reason the Matthews-Marner era can't have 10+ years off playoff entries. - Blazed

Why don't you just wait and sign him in the summer and keep Sikura and the 4th?
To me, if StanBo is going to make a trade, it will be along the lines of the Strome trade. I don't know who would be coming and going, but more of a guy we don't like anymore for a guy you don't like anymore, but we can fix. - CanOCorn

At the way Kane is going, more like 3 or 4 games. |

Cool. If Marner is going to get $10.5M - the odds of the Hawks somehow getting Kapanen is better. |

Heck. We have a trade. Gustafsson for Kapaenen. They get a guy to replace Gardiner's production and maddening defensive lapse of judgement at a fraction of the cost and the Hawks get a top 9 winger with some potential.

Even if we say Rielly and Keith are equal, they're not, they have no Seabrook, Hjalmarsson or Campbell/Oduya to round out their top 4. |

Looks like Stone is going UFA, Marner isn't going to take less than Stone, who makes $7.35 now, probably looking at $9 plus |

I can pretty much gaurantee Kapanen won’t go to the Hawks.
Kapanen is close to their best trade chip, he’s not untouchable, but if he goes it’s with the intention of acquiring a very good defenseman. |

I really don’t get the cap hell? What’s going to happen?
When Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander all on on the team next year and the year after, and both those years the Leafs are a top 3 team in the East what are people going to say?
Must be hell. |

They arn’t a comparison. If someone wants to offer Stone the moon as UFA so be it.
Not relevant to Marner’s value. If Rantanen signs a monster first, very relevant. |
