That post I was kidding about. I know I'm an idiot. But the rebuild started when you axe Girardi and Stepan without replacing them.
- tomburton99

As I mentioned and detailed why on yesterday's blog (points #2 & 3 here), this is year 1 of their rebuild, and not year 2, to which I will add three other points to further support why.

1) They were forced to buyout one of either Girardi's or Staal's remaining contracts after the 2017 postseason to create cap space to improve their roster. They chose the Right Handed shooting Girardi, as per reasons who they were targeting as his replacement (in point #2).

2) As for Stepan, they were forced to trade him due first to his NTC beginning that very next 2017/18 season. The second reason was to replace the 2017 just retiring & RH shooting power play specialist in Dan Boyle with Shatty, who was ready to become a free agent. But in addition to buying out Girardi, they needed to shed Stepan's $6.5M to create cap space alone for Shatty, who in agreeing to $6.65M, accepted less than offered from I believe the Devils, since he grew up as a local Rangers fan.

3) Going into last season, they still considered themselves to be a Cup contender, or else after the 2107 postseason, they would not have signed Shatty, nor re-signed Smith to 4 year deals each. So how could they have been rebuilding from back then???

4) In still being a Cup contender, they also hired a new assistant coach in Lindy Ruff, for reasons first due to A.V.'s (& also Ulf Samuelsson's), questionable coaching moves both player deployment wise, and game strategically, which contributed greatly to them losing that 2nd Round series to Ottawa in 2017, in blowing big leads in 3 of the 4 losses. But even greater so, Ruff was also hired in July, 2017 to be waiting in the wings as a LIKELY HEAD COACH REPLACEMENT for A.V., should the team play poorly under A.V.

5) The team played poorly from the start of last season under A.V., that at some point prior to issuing their REBUILDING MEMO to their fans & others, they finally realized they were no longer a true Cup contender. Otherwise, Ruff would have instead replaced A.V. as head coach either during last season, or thereafter, without them ever announcing an official rebuild and becoming sellers prior to last year's deadline.

Saver, for the love of god...this is not year one. Was I comatose for a year?

Gortan even stated in the sporting news it’s started with the Stepan trade.

Rebuilds start with a certain draft and draft picks, nothing else matters. They started to trade off assets with Stepan, and haven’t stopped...

2017 it starts- Andersson and Chytil (one via acquisition-that alone signals the intent, TO AT LEAST, start the rebuild)

2018- Kravtsov, Miller and Lundkvist (2 vis acquisitions)

2019- they have there own and probably at least one more

This is the 3rd draft coming up during said rebuild, 2 full NHL seasons...it’s either 2 or 3 years, depending how you judge the NHL year to end and begin. I believe it starts at the draft of a said year. 3 drafts, 3 years of rebuilding.

You one year people are nuts I’m sorry

In fact, if people will recall, that team was not supposed to go far at all in 2017-18. Smoke n mirrors produced a decent first half and we all knew the shots against would catch up to them. They were no way near contenders that year at any point because we all knew they would continue to sell off guys (ie-Nash, Mac, etc)

Signing a Shatty has no bearing if it’s a rebuild or not, it’s one damn player and Stepan needed to be traded for sure, but they got 0 NHL ready talent in that trade in order to compete last year. Zero. Deangelo wasn’t good enough yet to even be in the NHL basically, he played 32 games and not well

Rant over...This is making me crazy

Puljujarvi strikes me as a Yakapov2.0... i think he can be had in a few years for less (like Strome was). I’m curious if there was more to the Darren Raddysh trade that seemed to come out of nowhere. Maybe we trade with TBL for his brother Taylor? It would make sense for TBL to trade with us again since their 1st and 2nd are in purgatory and keeping them from making moves elsewhere

I thought Tampa considered him untouchable. I’m not sure short of trading them Hayes and Zucc that they would include him in any package

If the Rangers do not complete a trade of any of their UFA's by midnight Friday, the odds are that nothing major outside of McQuaid being dealt will likely occur until the earliest at least late afternoon Sunday after their day game at Washington.
That's due also for one reason in Calgary being greater interested now in acquiring Hayes, in possibly feeling that his one time buddy known as "Johnny Hockey" could convince him to sign there long term. The other reason is that Calgary could also be interested in a package of Hayes coming along with Zucc, (who they had first interest in for about a month or so), depending on who they also may want the Rangers to accept in part as return off their own roster. That could increase the two's values received from any team if traded together or separately.
The Rangers could also be delaying on trading either for reasons of hoping Ottawa officially does something with Stone by tomorrow at the latest. If so, that could even further up the trade value of Hayes and Zucc from some desperate teams, with Gorton having said a few days ago that they would wait as long as possible until satisfied with a return versus it better to re-sign them. However, with word yesterday that Rangers contract negotiations were not close with either, that could have for now temporarily lowered offers from certain teams.

Possibly? But maybe if we lift the condition off of our pick and make it a straight up 2nd, plus Raddysh, plus maybe something else small for Zucc I’d be into it. Especially because im in the camp of Zucc re-signing back here in the summer

Then it leaves TBL to dangle their 1st to make another move or keep it
