The TT trade was a cap induced trade so somewhat understandable. The Danault trade was just plain bad. - Elbows15
It was a really big price to pay to get rid of only one year of Bickell's deal- buying him out would have made. so much more sense. My guess is Stan thought he had a better, faster version of TT in Schmaltz waiting in the wings. Oops

Problem is Bickell should have never been given that deal in the first place. The Danault deal still makes you want to reach for an air sick bag. The bigger problem with that one is ole Stan failed to get the dman he so badly needed and instead got hot garbage...how good would Danault look on this team right now? Yikes... - DK002
Well no one new he was in the early stages of MS. Probably worth the contract if he didn't have it. Sure Stan could have signed him earlier that season for less but it is what it is.... I don't place that much blame on Stan.
The Danault trade though.... yuck. |

Schmaltz turned into Strome so it ended nicely. Dcat Strome TT would be a nice 2nd line. |

Because Stan hasn’t acquired Stone, Panarin, Simmonds, or Lundqvist yet!!!
Come on Stan do something! Pick up the phone! Stop waiting around! You’ve got the cap space! The world is your oyster! |

Bichell should not have gotten 4mil after his huge playoffs, taking a team friendly bridge deal, being awesome in the locker room and the single only big body/physical presence they had?
Clowe signed for 5mil. Clarkson over 5mil. Bickell signed for 4mil and was playing thru MS. Even his last year here when they won the cup vs TB, he was a physical force playing thru pain.
But keep the narrative going that Bickell at 4mil was somehow "overpaid". Dude earned his paycheck thru his entire Chicago career |

Dude you are SOOOO cool. We all wish we were so witty and bad ass like you...you are the Bob Probert of our board.
Can't you just tell us all that you work for the team...it is so obvious..the brilliance...the insight.... - TrueGrit
I like Probert, and Elbows.
I'm just going to sit back and watch Colliton turn this team around, like he did with Mora. Except I don't think he'll have 4 years with the Hawks, like he did in Tier 2.

Ah, cap space. The Hawks don't have a cap space issue this year or next. Unless they go nutty on a UFA signing - which will be too much money and too much term for a player who is about to suck. Then they will have cap problems and will have trouble signing Strome, Cat, et al. - mohel
Ahhh, beg to differ. There is very little cap space now or next year for sure.
Next year, if no changes, Hawks have nine forwards signed for $36.370MM (so need four more), four D signed for $17.464MM, (need three more), and two goalies in CC and Delia for $7MM combined.
This assumes losing Kunitz, Kruger and Ward, with Forsling, KooKoo, Dahlstrom, Perlini, Kampf and Sikura as RFAs. If they all are kept and only get the minimum 10% bump, that's $6MM to keep them all.
That's almost $61MM with a need to sign five more players, or $67MM if you re-up the RFAs, AND reserve enough room to extend ADB and Strome.
Biggest questions are:
What are ADB and Strome worth to extend?
$5-6MM each at least I think, so there goes $10-12MM of your space with no one new added.
What will the upper limit be next year and the year after?
Bettman hints at $82MM for next year, who knows about the following, so if we just work with $82MM as next year's limit, and all of the pending RFA's get signed at minimum deals, that's $15MM in space BEFORE re-signing ADB and Strome.
What are they honestly going to upgrade via free agency with only $4MM in cap space when top six/top 4 guys START at $6MM each? |

Right - I know the circumstances of both trades - I just meant that the Danault trade is usually considered the worst trade Stan has made and although I know others disagree, I consider losing Teuvo more impactful from a negative perspective than losing Danault.

Strome and Cat will still be on their ELC deals next season - any extension goes into effect the next season. Recalculate.
And I said they have cap space this season and next, but would be in cap hell if they overpay some UFA who is about to be bad. Said that is would make it hard to resign the kids to their extensions. Seems you agree, no? |

Well the point I was trying to make is that the math really means they don't have any cap space to work with at all. On paper, they have "space" next year, but they have to withhold at least enough to reup ADB and Strome.
So absent any salary dump deals, they basically have $2-4MM in space to acquire anyone via trade or FA over the next two years

Brassard to Colarado
3rd - Colbyboy
Thankfully, people wanna trade for him, really?
Sometimes the best thing to do is not make a trade if it doesn't help this team.
The only way you might get a really solid prospect is wait till the last minute |

TT is still soft
Schmaltz flipped for Strome, out of all 3 he's going to probably be the best out of the bunch so yea it worked out pretty good for the Hawks |

And need another goalie of his pedigree to replace him. Delia has promise, but hard to anoint him a true #1 yet.
