Simmer will be missed for sure. Fun to watch and even more fun to cheer for.
With that being said, I like the deal. A RFA that is decent adds some playing depth while saving some cap space. They can resign him for cheap and still use the extra cap space to upgrade during the off season.
Losing players is part of the new cap league.
Most likely that is a 3rd round pick. It will help soften the blow of saying bye to simmer but that was going to happen in a couple months anyways. |

IDK. I don’t have any clear thoughts about that yet. If it is still a longer term deal, we are out of the running. - NC Flyers Fan
I don't see a spot for Simmonds next year and I doubt Simmonds is willing to play on the 4th line for short term and lower salary that he is making now.

There's 7 Simmonds is not playing over. Now if Frost makes the team there's 8. Now if the wildest dreams come true and the Flyers luck out with Hughes or Kakko OR they sign a top 6 winger now Simmonds has 0% chance of cracking the top 9.

A 20 goal winger is a more useful player than a PK role player. - MJL
Maybe we will get lucky and we will get the kid who scored 19 goals in his first full NHL season.

Lets play a scenario...
Hextall is still GM today. 7 points out from the WC; does Hexy keep Simmonds for a run or trade him today? |

I still think he would of been traded by Hextall. |

He trades him. Zero doubt. I don't see any rational GM who would think the Flyers have a good chance at making the playoffs.

Okay so as usual you have a lot wrong
He's an RFA
None of those players were available in a trade for Simmonds so why even bring them up - bulet13
OK so I am wrong about UFA part as for your other question, you literally told me to name players via FA this offseason equal to or better than Hartman there was the list. I dont care about getting a player back. I wanted at least a 2nd round pick. My point was I could pick up any of those guys via FA over Hartman. We dont need him. We would have been a lot better off with a 2nd than a 4th. We dont even get a 3rd if NSH is upset in playoffs which is probably likely. |

Oh, I see what you are saying, but I just can’t even pretend to know if the Flyers will keep all 7 forwards you list or what other players might be added to the mix. It does feel extremely unlikely given the term issue plus fit, and Simmer won’t have had his bounce back year yet (which I firmly believe he will have.)

Agreed. Not sure of what return he would be focused on but a trade is still made. |

This doesn't make any sense. If they don't resign him and he moves either by trade, which he did or walks after the season, the Flyers gain whatever cap space they would've used to resign him to use somewhere else. There is no assumption there.
A player like Panarin could make a huge difference to this team. A lesser player such as Hayes being a center could also make an impact. - MJL
You related how the cap space element of the deal will be what could bring back a bigger ufa. I’m not sure what deal you are referring to but the flyers moved Simmonds who is a ufa at the end of the year. This deal has absolutely nothing to do with cap space as the same cap space next year is available to the flyers whether they Made this trade or not. Resigning him is something different altogether and is a totally different conversation.

I'm the one who asked the question, not him. The question was based on your post that player like Hartman are a dime a dozen free agency, is to name a player that they can get in free agency for the SAME COST? You tend to have to overpay players in free agency. Reference Dale Weise.
I don't think you've thought this out very well.

All I know is I am reviewing all his career NHL goals and most are rips that beat the goaltender. I have only seen one garbage goal where it went off his glove/arm and went in.
Average skater (little clunky at times), very tenacious and loves to play physical and can shoot the puck. |

I disagree completely. The cap space that they save by not resigning Simmonds is absolutely part of the conversation and a factor in the deal.

What? Not likely. They will be a higher seed. There is a chance though. But I think likely is not the word.
Your right that there will be better players in FA but they will cost a lot compared to what Hartman will cost as a RFA. They money they save in Hartman can be used else where and he will add more depth to this team.
Just depends how you look at it. Big picture or small picture. |

The way I look at it, I know most can't do this, but I don't care what Simmonds does with Nashville or whatever team he signs with. He could have a 40 goal season next year, all I know is he is not doing that with the Flyers. |

I think highlight tapes are not an ideal way to evaluate a player but it does show that he does have some skill.

I know people are talking about Simmonds like he was drafted 1 overall and lit the league on fire. He was loved in LA for his work ethic and passion. Came to Philly and had some success, but everything must end. Now they got the best years out of Simmonds and still get a younger similar player, how can you not like that...PLUS you get another player out of it if they use the 3rd round pick. |

Well he is still only 24 so I am willing to hope he may. Some players bloom later. Not many of those late bloomers score 19 as a rookie.
Maybe we get lucky. Either way, his cap hit will be relatively low.

Well, I could watch old games to see all his shifts too, but that wouldn’t tell me how he meshes with Flyers players. It’s more of a potential and skill evaluation.

I am not evaluating him fully as a be-all-end-all. I was curious to review how he scored his goals. Obviously what he does when he is not scoring is just as important, just like when reviewing Simmonds.
I was actually pleasantly surprised to see he doesn't hesitate to shoot and when he does can pick a spot. Snapshot is pretty quick, likes to one-time and I personally feel the Flyers could use more of that. |
