If someone asked who you would prefer between Risto and Drew Doughty, I'm sure most here would say DD without thinking twice.
DD could finish worse in +/- ( he's at -27 Risto is at -28). He has 5g 29a (all 5g on the pp along with 14a) Risto has 5g 33a (1g 12a on the pp). Risto has 65 more hits, 12 more blocked shots, 46 less giveaways and 3 more takeaways. DD has played 157 more minutes. He is 5 years older than Risto and starting next season will be making $5.6m more. Risto may not be the future #1 that people wanted him to be, but he is not the #1 problem either. |

I think the players that matter long term have made progress.
Skinner has proved to be an excellent winger for Eichel
Dahlin is fantastic
Reinhart has been great
Mittelstadt has improved if only marginally
Pilut was handled poorly
My only question is did Housley get better? Did Botterill?
Coaching is a legit concern |

If you put a gun to my head I'd still take Doughty. If not, hard pass on both. |

I really don't think any coach can improve this current lineup. You could merge the minds of Al Arbor, Scotty Bowman, Toe effing Blake, Herb Brooks, Mike Babcock ... whomever... doesn't matter. We'd still suck. We need better players, it's that simple. Basically, we're screwed.

How can you say that? The building blocks are here. One or two bad contracts, not the end of the world. |

maybe i'm more of a fan of mitts, but I think he's progressed nicely, especially in his 200' game...yeah, I know he missed a backcheck the other night but he's looks like he's gonna be a good one

Mike Babcock is the Canadian Dan bylsma. Maybe if they bring Lidstrom, Rafalski, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Holmstrom back he can win a playoff series. An orangutan could coach Canada to a gold medal at the olympics, no offense. |

That's kind of where I am coming from as well. Over the past few years, we have hired (everyone gets excited - see Blysma and Housley) and then run them out of town (Blysma and soon Housley) in the hopes that the next great coach will magically solve our problems. If we had coach Q coaching these clowns, do you think the results would be significantly different than now? Is it Housley's fault when Bogoo throws a pass up the middle or Hunwick makes a bad pinch? Where does the accountability start and end? To me, it starts with the individual. 3 coaches in 5-years with the same relatively crappy results suggests to me that we have a bunch of lunk-heads wearing Sabres uniforms. Either they can't or they won't follow a game plan.
I am no apologist for Housley. I just don't think there would be that much of a difference with a new coach at the helm. |

Doesn't hurt having 3 of your top 6 in contract years. As well as 2 goalies likely to win the Jennings. |

The Sabres are the ones doing all the sucking around these parts
It's like that scene in Bella Donna's spontaneous Bella Donna where she steals the come from the other girls mouth after the money shot.

That’s due to Trotz system. Lehner and Griess were easily the two worst goalies by NHL standards last year now they are both Vezina candidates. Grubauer has done nothing in Colorado. Holtby isn’t as good as he was last season. |
