How come every other teams 4th line can score and ours can’t ? They don’t do the defending too well either even though they get the defensive heavy minutes. - Pegullaville
AGAIN...
if Lines 2 & 3 were scoring up to par,
we wouldn’t even notice the MINOR drop off in scoring from our line4 to others
Larsson & Girgs are -7 & -8
That’s not bad at all considering the defensive minutes they get
Jack is a -3 |

No the real answer is we don’t have NHL Caliber 2-4 lines. |

Larsson has a 49.4% corsi with 85.1% dzone starts.
Sheary has a 51.1% corsi with 72.5% ozone starts.
The problem here is obvious.
Hard not to be impressed with Larsson's turnaround. He fills a massive hole on this team. |

Sure, we could improve over Larsson & Girgs
But they’re hardly the problem with why we are losing games
Needing our 4th line to average a couple more goals apiece is the very least of our problems
And simply replacing those guys with others who will score a bit more,
is shortsighted at best
Bc those guys probably aren’t equipped to handle the defensive role
And not only will their scoring drop compared to how they score now
They’ll give up more goals than our current defensive unit
Simply putting E Rod & Pommer on line4 doesn’t FIX what’s going on
Focusing on that is ridiculous |

Exactly... Girgs too
But a lot of it has to do with finally using them correctly as well |

Tyler Ennis is on the 4th line and it’s working out alright for the leafs. Why can’t Erod and Pominville kill penalties and have defensive zone starts ? Eichel and the 2nd Line C could also take more defensive zone draws. |

The problem isn't really the Centers. It's the wingers. Sheary and Skinner are so bad defensively that they pull them off the ice when those lines do start on D most of the time. It's a big problem.

Agreed. Let's start with lines 2 & 3 complete lack of production relative to other 2 & 3 lines in the NHL before we focus on fixing our 4th line. And i do agree with Sbroads and others that it makes far more sense to have Rhino with Mitts on #2 than load-up with Rhino on Jack's line. Stick Pommer or Tage Norwood beside Jack and they'll score some goals. Spread the wealth around a little bit. |

Any scoring that E Rod & especially Pommer get now will be reduced if playing MUCH more heavily defensively
And why would u wanna put Jack & especially Mitts in the defensive end more?
Their lines should be focused on scoring,
not getting the puck into the other end & then changing lines
In a vacuum...
sure, it’s great to put guys on line4 that MIGHT score more
But putting them on line4 lowers their expected scoring
And using Jack & Mitts lines in those situations does the same

I'm so sick of hearing Botterill and Housley talk about this team making progress. Throw away the winning streak, which required A LOT of luck, and we're the same team as the last couple years. - Freyster98

If Tavares and Point can do it why can’t we rely on Jack and Casey to eventually do it ? If we want to be a contender that’s what it will take. We can’t just have a defensive line that doesn’t score. We need 3 consistent scoring lines and a 4th line that has one guy with at least 10+ goals. Look at the rosters of the cup contenders. That’s what they have. |

We can’t overhaul 75% of the roster this offseason
Let’s stop focusing on the MINOR problems & fix the MAJOR ones FIRST
Make sense?
This team isn’t gonna be a contender NEXT season anyways
If we are developing properly,
eventually guys like Asplund & Davidsson (who hopefully can provide more scoring AND play well defensively) will be taking the jobs of the guys u hate
There’s no rush to ship these guys out though |

Did my reasearch and he is 58th in league history in worst plus minus of all time at -130 - Sabre_Tooth
Yeah, that's horrific. He also plays every shift against the other team's top line, for a team that purposely tried to lose for 2 years in a row, and as a few almost giddily point out the first team to finish 31st. I don't care who you are, your numbers are going to be in the tank in that situation.
He's also 21st in scoring in total for the last 4 years on the first team to finish 31st and tried to lose purposely for 2 of them. |

Ok
Erod and Pommer should have been on line 4, but they have a pulse, so they moved into the top 6. Sobotka, Girgensons, Larsson, Wilson and Thompson are AHL players wandering around the rink doing something that resembles hockey.
Girgensons-Erod-Pominville is a decent 4th line.
The play of Wilson-Larsson-Girgensons is a line from a classic tragedy

Olofsson-Eichel-Nyquist
Skinner-Mitts-Reinhart
Sheary-Nelson-Thompson
Tanev-Erod-Okposo
Brock Nelson plays PK and can hold himself defensively. Reinhart has good defensive metrics on the 2nd line. Tanev and erod play Pk and are defensive with scoring upside.
