Good blog. I think the only player really in an “audition” role is Duclair. Could be his last kick at the can in Ottawa. I’d be more interested in his off ice and attitude rather than his on-ice performance as those aspects seem questionable so far in his career.
I’d sign Nilson only if Andy is moved but don’t really care either way.
Of the younger guys from Wolanin on should be looked at on a case by case basis. Some guys should be in the AHL next year, but some might be just fine at the NHL level. I think it’s a mistake to throw too many youngsters out to the wolves but if they can play and not look out of place in the NHL, that should be ok for development.
So far, I think many guys on this roster look way out of place in terms of being NHL players and that is not necessarily good for development.
Going to be a long couple of years and I hope they don’t rush guys too soon. I’m still in the minority thinking our prospect pool isn’t as great as many have been preaching, but would be happy to be proven wrong.

Yes- sign a couple of top sixers and depth D to remain somewhat relevant |

I hope I'm wrong but our prospect pool really doesn't look more fantastic than a lot of other teams in the league that are not even rebuilding. I sure hope we get a huge star pick in the 2020 draft that is a high scoring forward because Tkachuk brings grit and Chabot, Brannstrom and Wolanin bring offense from the blue line but other than Batherson I don't see any incredibly high scoring forwards in senators prospects.
And if Melnyk truly is planning on unparalleled success soon I'm just not sure I see our group of prospects turning into a team like the Blackhawks or the Penguins have been able to field for multiple cup runs. Or even be as good as the Sens roster from 2000-2007 which was not ever able to win a cup (thanks to Toronto and the lockout in 04-05) |

An asset has a negotiable value.
Picks, prospects and young players on entry level deals have enhanced asset value in the summer, especially for teams needing to get under the CAP.
You would want to believe the Sens will be looking to acquire a top 6 skater to help provide them with some veteran leadership and stability.
Love the prospect pool. But, they will need some help. - spatso
Nailed it. A post i can finally agree with.
There is no better way to kick off a rebuild than trading picks and prospects for veteran leadership imo tbh. |

My guess is the Leafs would give the Sens a 4th round pick to take Marleau. Tampa and Winnipeg should make better offers.

Ya. I am in the same mindset. I’m not even that excited for the Chabot, Brannstrom and Wolanin (lesser extent) puck moving ability from the back end. I feel Chabot alone sort of filled the void that Karlsson left and replacing the secondary puck movement left from Wideman leaving isn’t hard. My bigger concern for the defence is actually playing defence which the team doesn’t really have anyone doing and if they are, they blow at it.
You hit the nail on the head that there doesn’t seem to be much high-end forward talent coming through the system. It’s still early in the rebuild, but think people have to temper expectations on the prospect group. Rebuilding does not equate to having all your prospects pan out. I’d really like to see some talented forwards taken in the draft. Ones that shoot and pass well but may be lazy defensively or what have you. You can teach technicalities of the game but you can’t teach natural ability. Instead of picking the coach friendly 2 way forward, go with a more skilled guy.

dude, you are on a roll today. marleau is the exact type of wily vet the sens could use.
one of your most realistic posts.
i could definitely see marleau waiving his nmc to finish out his career with the sens. |

kind of off topic, but anyone else starting to get a little more excited about that 2019 CBJ 1st rounder we have?
they have been playing like absolute poop since the TDL. as of right now it would be pick 15 I believe, but if they keep playing this way it's not impossible to think that could even get a couple of places better. - sensarmy_11
Would be nice to be the benefactors of a cursed Duchene trade, this time around. Doubt they will drop that far though. |

Is 15th overall better than say two picks in the 20s?
It certainly would help the Sens adding some top end talent |

I agree. You summed it up well, the Sens always take the two way safe guy, and even then it doesn't always pan out (Lazar). There should be some skilled wingers in the draft this year, especially Columbus doesn't pan out as well as they expected.
Formenton to me seems like one of the guys we want them to develop. Explosive speed, but still needs to develop a scoring touch. His injury slowed up down, and maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I feel like his number should be a little higher. He's got lots of time though.
