Context. Virtanen at 6 vs McCann at 24(?). I don’t know the exact consensus ranking, but I’m pretty sure there were some that had Virtanen slipping all the way to round 2. - 1970vintage

Also on his third team in his short career...... - SMP8719
How about Pearson, his third team in the same season... |

yah i don't think the surgeons are going to have to take any extra precaution in that area. |

I just read a couple old scouting reports. One had him in the 10-15 range. I think CSS had him #6 NA, another didn’t give him a number, but said best case was a top 6 winger and most likely was bottom 6 winger who could chip in occasionally due to consistency issues.
Point being, the expectation of a player selected 6th and one selected 24th are typically different |

He was consensus top 10. Button was the only one that had him in the second round. I believe Mackenzie had him at 8 - always the most accurate list |

Nearly all the mocks had him going to Vancouver. Regardless, that pick has been polarizing since it was made. |

15 team no trade list starting next season. I'll be surprised if he's dealt prior to the year his contract expires however. |

Another reclamation project.... wait and see.... his contract combined with his current production is what caused the moves. I am not high on Pearson but better then EG |

I agree, plus his shoulder injury really messed up his development. |

Do you mean like the Coyotes, who had 4 straight top 10 picks, starting in 06, that got OEL and player who is slightly above average , like Turris? - Reubenkincade
Definitely a good example. My feeling Boeser will be a more impactful player than Turris but could be close. |

Isn't the first round or 2 the only choices he makes?? After that I believe the scouts are heavily relied on? - SMP8719
I do think that is the case, but I tend to lay it all at the feet of GM's good and bad as they are responsible for putting the teams in place.
Benning deserves a lot of praise for identifying Judd and promoting for example. |

I wouldn't put too much stock in what he said after the fact. Of course you're going to say you made the right decision immediately following.
Nobody walks out of a draft like "Wow we really (frank)ed that one up didn't we?" - NorthNuck
Its harder to find quotes pre draft but my memory was that Benning was talking about needing those types of players from day one. |

I have no problem with the Virtanen pick. He didnt work out but the process was ok. Big strong and fast with a nice shot. That skill set is hard to find. His IQ holds him back but that is such a hard thing to access with a 17year old. Juolevi was a mistake and they tried to get too cute. No issues with any of Jim’s other first round picks |

this basically kills his trade value. multiple sports hernia surgeries is a major red flag for any pro athlete. |

I will never understand why Juolevi was ranked higher than Sergachev |

Cool, but again, that wasn’t the thrust of my point. It is about expectation based on where players were drafted. |
