Most college guys are looking to sign with a team better than they were playing on.

Because if the Rangers sign him and he plays at all this yer I think they burn the first year of his ELC.

He can play in less then 10 games and does not burn a year off ELC form I have seen.

you know what, if it takes that incentive to get him over here I'd do it anyway

if becoming a RFA a year sooner helps him make his move over here, I say do it

At least that is how it's been explained. But it's unclear. But I don't want to waste a year on him on for to play like 9-12 games.

There's been conflicting reports. Everything I saw was that he burned a year off if he even played 1 game with us because they go by birth year regardless of when your bday is (his is late December) and not when you actually turn the age. Then, the other day Jan said he found out he could play the 9 games.

Honestly, it's not worth the chance of any ambiguity, just let him sit and do all the prospect tourneys in the offseason.

I gotta disagree. You gotta think about the cap and expansion draft.

Oh so its some weird year birthday thing. Didn't realize you guys drafted a 30 year old Russian.

well you also have to think he might say "hey, I can make more money in the KHL" than an entry level NHL deal

True. But that is the known risk if drafting kids from there.

if during the negotiations to get him over here, his agent requests that he play with the Rangers immediately so he can get to RFA quicker, you'd say no?

When is the soonest you can sign an ELC to an extension? In your scenario, I'd have some serious agreements in place on what the next contract would be.

The only advantage in your scenario is if in his "rookie" year he scores like 40-50 points. Maybe you can sign him on more favorable terms on July 2020. Then, you don't have to worry if he explodes the next year.

his next contract will definitely be more than 875K though

I think that him and his agent want him to play immediately, and thats probably what they are negotiating right now

I'm just saying, if it happens, nobody should flip out, the Rangers bowed to their request

Just trade him to DET for Athanasiou. Problem solved.
