The Royal you!! That’s no better - you replied to me directly, basically saying my opinion is ape-like, what kinda response did you expect?

Better questions - what would u do to fix the D?

Trade Tanev
Sign AE23 for 1 year (at a time)
Sign Hutton 1 year only
Sign 1 year $1.150m UFA

Let Biega, UFA, Sautner, OJ, MacEnneny, Brisebois, Chatfield etc fight it out for playing time.

I don’t believe the team will be that much better next year, at least not playoff good. I also believe you can’t “fix” this D, you can only Give it the time it needs to turn over.

I agree we suck - the D is not good - but the list of UFA D is not enticing. For example can Gardiner replace Edler? Or Myers instead of Tanev? If you can believe it he's been more injury prone than both Tanev and Edler together. I don't have the answer how to fix the D but I don't think its through a complete overhaul by means of UFA - and trading is extremely hard no matter who the GM and what assets you have.
- Brooks_Light

If we continue to roll with Tanev/Edler it will take time. Hughes is gonna help huge as his skating is NHL calibre already.

I don't have the answers either all I know is we need to move on from Edler/Tanev ASAP and go from there.

Not sure UFA's are the way to go lol

To me, it makes sense to get rid of your crappy players for better ones.

Example: out with pouliot and in woth Hughes = hopefully a big improvement

Out with guddy in with UFA

I’m down to trade tanev for some younger assets at the deadline.

I’d say Hughes’ skating is top-end NHL caliber already.

He’s easily the best skater on the team.

The real question is what side do you see Hughes on long term? He can play both sides. For now I'd like him on the left if it means Poo comes out of the lineup.

That is a much worse d and totally unstable as no one has job security. 1 year contracts are for 35+. In the real world players will just go elsewhere.

Here’s how I would approach “fixing” this team.

Big UFA signings make more sense for teams that are already locks or near-locks for the playoffs. So I would just sit on my hands on July 1st and 2nd and then if there’s some good value to be had, I’d look into it.

Most importantly, you need to build your own playoff-caliber core through drafting, development and smart trades. This team has a start, but isn’t here yet.

I see no reason why you'd get rid of them. Ideally, you want them to slide down the roster. they are still good defensemen and probably better suited in a supporting role. You can't have a whole season like Saturday night versus Vegas, it'll wear the team down and negatively affect development.

What you want is to get rid of poopty defensemen like Pouliot and Schenn, maybe Biega and try to improve on the upper end.

Say for example (forget about likelihood it happens), JB signs Gardiner to be your number 1. Potentially your top 2 are Gardiner and Hughes. Arguably exponentially better than Edler and Tanev. Edler is your number 3, Stecher 4, Tanev 5 and Hutton 6 and throw in Juolevi as your callup and replacing Hutton by Christmas.

That's a playoff team defense......first round exit but I digress.....

You can't load up your defense with 3 rookies and not expect it to negatively impact the team.... Meant for Vinty....

This is the approach the team has taken the last couple of years. The value of Beagles contract could be debated as I'm sure many agree he is overpaid but this is in principle what JB has been trying to do.

We've had the pleasure of Watching Edler/Tanev guide us to the bottom 5 three years running...I'm thinking the grass is gonna be greener bro lol

And I don't mean Travis Greener...

Trade Tanev - absolutely (if possible) but it leaves a hole and I highly doubt you're getting back someone in said trade to fill that hole.
Signing Edler/Hutton to one year deals is highly unlikely (you know that) and still it doesn't ice a better team.
1 year UFA for 1.150 gets you someone like Orpik, Petrovic or Wideman - don't see how that helps either

I think getting rid of Guddy, Pouliot, Biega is a great start - my opinion was simply I don't think you fix the D in UFA and a complete overhaul is illogical - I don't know whats so crazy about that idea?

So we should keep JB since he's clearly very, very good at building through the draft as you described. In fact you might be hard pressed to find a Canuck GM ever that has garnered value picks deep into the draft, the only real comparable being Burke?

I agree with everything you said until that statement - Gardiners not that good and he's a pretty good team, imagine what he'd be like here as a #1 AND on a big, fat, long contract? He would HATE him - like Eriksson level hate, maybe more...

I don't think Gardiner/Myers (who are arguably the 2 best UFAs, other than pipe dream Karlsson) are better than Edler/Tanev
But I would even say Edler/Tanev - Gardiner/Hughes - Hutton/Stetcher - Juolevi 7 is a better defence - but it all comes down to how often they're all injured - which is usually all the time.

Was just an example to make a point. I just dont see Karlsson coming to Vancouver and Myers would be a mistake.

I think if you paired Tanev and Gardiner, I could see Gardiner getting #1, maybe #2 minutes.....but again, was just an example...

Is someone else responsible for his very sound drafting? If the solution is to build through the draft and not rush, which GM that is available is better suited for it?

Not trying to bait, but I think those that accept that it will take a long time also need to realize JB has done a very good job at at least one aspect of GM and that is the scouting and development. Who do you think redesigned Utica? Does it not seem like a much more legitimate developmental team?

I would be somewhat down with Mark Hunter. I think he has done a wonderful job and I like the type of guys that have come out of London. But is he better at drafting/developing?

Any other team we talk about how well or poorly the GM did, never is a . scout mentioned and for good reason: the GM put them in place, gave them their job to do and told them how he wanted them to do it. You don't look at TB and say man they built through the draft the director of scouting is the man. (frank) that, everyone of us would say: Yzerman did an incredible job patiently building through the draft around Hedman and Stamkos. This narrative where someone other than JB is responsible for all the kids drafted during his tenure is HORSEpoop. apparently I'm a bit fired up this morning

I don't want Gardiner. That being said our D pairings being Gardiner-Tanev, Edler-Hughes, Hutton-Stetcher is far better than we have now.

I agree, more trades I would really like to have seen and see next year or even prior to the draft. But who is out there to draft that will do a better job? If we agree it's best to draft and develop, who is his replacement? More picks would be amazing, but the replacement or addition to the staff has to be there. I think JB needs to be added to, but in terms of drafting he has gained my trust 1000%

I also noticed he omitted the Kesler and Bieksa deals. convenient. Any others he "missed"?
