Jake? - Bettmanhatesus
Jake is fast, but he’s not a good skater. His edge work isn’t as great, he’s not a slick maneuvering skater. |

He's a good straight line skater. Hughes is officially the best (easily) skater on this team now that he is actually signed. it is that good. |

Less than a month away until the draft lotto where we will finish first. Hopefully that will quiet nuckers complaining for awhile and it will prove to Makita that Green is a great coach |

what scares me, is the fact that Benning has openly said that he is not trading picks for the sole purpose that the draft is being held in Vancouver. To appease fans and try and recover some good will in Vancouver, it scares me to think that he might trade up to get Jack Hughes. |

If we win pick #3 who do you pick? I'm leaning toward Byram like many on here, but Podkolzin seems to have huge boom/bust potential and Krebs may be the LW we need going forward. I think I still go with Byram.
If we pick 8th is it York or Broberg? maybe one of the wings, again it seems to be either a wing or dman this year. One of each in the opening rounds would be good. |

Tanev and 8 for hughes? Colorado may be shopping the guy as Jost/Mac is pretty darn good. What's wrong with that? |

If it's BPA, Dach and Krebs are both rated higher by Central scouting. It's arguably the most reliable source. |

That was my suggestion from the other day, more or less. I could see Benning trying to trade up to 1 with our first for next year, then trading tanev to a playoff team for their first next year. |

Tanev has lost so much value....he gets hurt way too often - dont think other GM's havent noticed, he was largely ineffective this year and has slowed.....
There is no way adding Tanev alone with a 1st gets you the first overall. |

i would imagine tanev as a stand-alone is MAYBE worth a 2nd round pick at this point, despite being a defensive defenseman on a decent cap hit contract. The guy is made of glass. Other GM's arent dumb, they know hes often injured. |

Ummm... no. He is actually statically among the top 5 defensive dman. You're of course right about the health, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. |

Is someone else responsible for his very sound drafting? If the solution is to build through the draft and not rush, which GM that is available is better suited for it?
Not trying to bait, but I think those that accept that it will take a long time also need to realize JB has done a very good job at at least one aspect of GM and that is the scouting and development. Who do you think redesigned Utica? Does it not seem like a much more legitimate developmental team?
I would be somewhat down with Mark Hunter. I think he has done a wonderful job and I like the type of guys that have come out of London. But is he better at drafting/developing?
Any other team we talk about how well or poorly the GM did, never is a . scout mentioned and for good reason: the GM put them in place, gave them their job to do and told them how he wanted them to do it. You don't look at TB and say man they built through the draft the director of scouting is the man. (frank) that, everyone of us would say: Yzerman did an incredible job patiently building through the draft around Hedman and Stamkos. This narrative where someone other than JB is responsible for all the kids drafted during his tenure is HORSEpoop. apparently I'm a bit fired up this morning - neem55
I'm not very happy with how things are being run in Utica. There's been a lot of discussion on this and some media personalities put some work into figuring out the ice time distribution and starts in Utica and it looks really bad. If the emphasis was on developing down there... many of our young players would be getting more starts and better minutes. It looks worse since we are supposed to be on the cusp of a wave of youth maturing. Either Canucks management is unfortunately on the same page or they need to set the priority straight for next season. 2nd round picks Lind and Gadovich need to play more. These guys have potential and should not sit out large portions of the season. |

It would be nice if JB targeted durable guys. It would mean no Karlsson, but Gardiner fits that bill. I think I like him out of all the UFA's the more I dig into it. He and Tanev would be a fairly good 1st pair and then Stecher/Hughes. Hutton can beat it.
Myers seems to have durability issues... not as high on him.
Rutta seems like a good cheap UFA option, 26 years old and just getting into NHL action. |

Again, if you’re this fired up about it then do the research yourself. People who’ve held front office jobs say that GM’s don’t have the time to scout an entire draft. They’re familiar with their top 30-40 ranked players and that’s about it. So I’m sure Benning knew plenty about Virtanen, McCann, Boeser, Demko, Lind, Juolevi, Pettersson, Hughes and Woo. But I doubt he saw many of the others play live.
My argument has always been that I prefer a GM who’s better at trades, contracts and NHL/AHL evaluation than Benning and to keep Brackett to fun the draft and scouting department.
There’s more to GM’ing than scouting 30-50 draft prospects. |

Please tell me more - stats? Links? What constitutes a "defensive defenseman"?
I guarantee I could rattle off at least 10 defensemen that would better defensive stats.... |

Came out in January 21st "midterm" rank. Byram has been good, but he's not ahead of those three on many draft sites. |

Well if you follow folks that actually watch all the comets games the common theme is the prospects just aren’t AHL ready and likely belonged in the ECHL. Lind and Gadj specifically. Tough to force a coach to give prime minutes to your worst players |
