Y'all just need to relax.

Zezel said it when he said this latest stretch is a good thing.

It'll force them to dig deep and to prove their mettle if they wanna have success in the playoffs.

Just sit back and enjoy.

- TheMussel

Relaxation is the key to everything. Leafs fans be frickin crazy. Some of the drivel written here is just (frank)in funny.

Why do you think that? They will be in a good cap situation 2 years from now and Matthews, Marner, Nylander are so young.

Leafs have years to contend. With the division as it is, I am glad they did not give up more.

- RogerRoeper

I felt this was the best year cap wise. Both marner and matthews on the cheap (very cheap) decent D (although 2 are injured) and still cap space.
Two years from now, jt will be older and slower, we'll have 3 guys making 30 plus million. We may or may not have kap, johnson or nylander....who knows (or we could still have all) and freddy will be making about 3-4 million more if he continues to play at his current pace (except the past couple of games).
Yes i know the cap will be up we assume.
But this seemed like a great year cap wise. However, i agree its evident now, the team is not ready.
So hopefully 2 years from now, but this year isnt over so we'll see.
Just my opinion
Anything can happen.

Agree completely. Theyll be fine once Marleau is off the books. The have many years to contend, and the cap is only going up.

Marleau is down to 1.24 points per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 this season, which is fourth-liner production.

yeesh

6 mil 4th liner production getting 2/3 line minutes

Thats a problem

Zaitsev is producing just 0.20 primary points per 60 minutes, which is second-to-last among defenceman logging more than 20 minutes per game.

yeesh, a top 4 D producing like a not top 4 d ..making 4.5 mil for the next 23 years

The Leafs are also carrying the full freight of Nathan Horton’s $5.3 million on the cap this year — the penalty for the Dave Nonis regime signing David Clarkson way back in 2013 — and getting nothing in return.

yeesh, thats a lot of wasted cap space you cant pay a useful player

Next year he can be put on LTIR and we can use the space since we are paying for the bonus overages this year.

Sh!t happens to every team.

Pittsburgh Penguins@penguins
Coach Sullivan confirms that Evgeni Malkin was out of the lineup due to a week-to-week upper-body injury.

Pitt could very well end up in a wildcard spot - not sure if Tampa would like to meet them in the 1st round...

There's a fewplayers just getting used far too much by the coach and Marleau is on-top of the list.

its probably a bigger deal than you think.
And it sounds very complicated and I am going to guess the Leafs dont want to use it

It will also be the last year of that contract along with Marleau, Muzzin, and Brown which have some cap hits we can shed if needed.

I think Brown gets traded in the summer. They need the cap room.

I get a sense a lot of fans (myself included) really dont know how LTIR works

Misconception Three

LTIR is not free cap space, and it has restrictions. It does not remove a player’s contract from the books. It does not change anything except for the amount you're allowed to spend. The problem with using LTIR is that if you use any LTIR, and by that I mean end the season with an averaged daily cap hit of over $75m, your team will have to pay any performance bonus earned in full as an overage the following season. So even if the Leafs have $5.3m to spend at the end of the season because of LTIR, they can't use it to pay for bonuses. That is why we had a $5.37m overage despite having over $13m in usable cap space from LTIR.

I assume the Leafs are cap smart and dont want to get into this hole. LTIR feels like a mechanism for a badly managed cap team that doesnt see another way out of a hole they created
