They did well with the hand that Staal dealt them - Sutter was a disappointment, and Pouliot was a bust. Dumo panned out but he was clearly the 3rd piece in that deal
I wouldn't change anything, because I don't think we guarantee ourselves 2 more cups with Staal staying. But by choosing to leave (or letting his intentions known) he set the franchise back in the short term. That short term just happened to be right in the Sid/Geno Prime Cup window
He put himself in front of his team, (family over winning) and he got neither
Sounds like Karma to me - RoloTahmasee
Imagine saying “he put family over winning” and meaning it as a negative. |

The timing of it was terrible
We were right in our cup window and all we got to put on the ice for the next 3 seasons was Sutter instead of Staal
Dumo was in the minors and the 1st (Pouliot) didn't pan out
Shero should have traded the #8 Overall for a young NHL ready now player, so the team got substantially worse for the next few seasons because of Staal
It was a selfish move by Staal and Karma got him. Played for a perennial loser most of his career, Eric got shipped out a few seasons later and Marc never lived up to his end of the bargain to move there too and the 4th brother Jared never made it - RoloTahmasee
DP didn’t work out for the Pens because they didn’t play him. Now he’s an NHL regular, so it’s not like he was a bust. Did he live up to an offensive defenseman superstar? Nah. But any draftee that can become an NHL regular is a success in my book. |

IMO Pens got a great return for him, especially when you consider everyone in the world knew he was going to sign with the Canes anyway. Would of been better if Pouliot panned out or they drafted someone more effective, but even still, Dumoulin is great and then Sutter turned into Bonino.
I have zero ill feelings towards Jordan Staal and still wish he was a Pen. - MattStrat
I’d rather have DP on the 3rd pairing than JJ. Especially for the price DP is making. |

DP is not good. He’s a third pairing d man on a bad team and would be the #7 on a ton of teams. I guess he didn’t bust in the sense that he can continue to play hockey for money, but let’s not pretend like he didn’t bust out of Pittsburgh on his own merit. Saying he’s better than one of the worst defensemen in the league to get regular minutes is a pretty low bar. |

He is one of two defensemen to post a positive goal differential on said worst team. He hovers around 50% cf. His scoring chances/high danger are kinda poopty but that’s expected of a 3rd pairing defenseman, but the fact that he is a positive goal differential at 5v5 on one of the worst teams in the NHL to me is impressive.

Let me rephrase this, do I think DP is great? Or even good? Nah. But he’s okay.
He would be an adequate puck moving defenseman on a 3rd pairing if he had a stable, positionally competent pairing ala Ian Cole type player. I think he’s better than JJ and Riikola.
He’s also not bad at controlling his own blue line.

Yeah (frank) this dude for wanting to have some agency on deciding where to spend the prime of his career, amirite? - Victoro311
Yeah, (frank) the CBA having rules!
I'm a millenial, but got damn these (frank)ing millenials. No one made him play pro hockey, he chose that profession, and he knew the rules. He knew when he signed his second contract, getting paid millions of dollars to play a game, that the Penguinsd would still have his rights.
So what did he do? Refuse to resign with a team that had treated you well and threaten to hold out so you can sign the same contract for a different organization.
Yeah, he's a true hero. |

You act like you can't see your family at all, ever because one plays in Carolina, and you play in Pittsburgh - and that there isn't life after your hockey Career
Well, congrats, Jordan - You're in Carolina and have endured 6 years of losing, and been injured for most of the 1 winning season you had. Your Brother Eric is all the way in Minnesota and he hasn't made any attempt to get back to Carolina. Marc never took the opportunity either
So, in the end, what was gained?
A heaping pile of Karma

He would be a top-6 on this current Penguins' team, even with Letang. |

What a heaping pile of a horrible take.
Getting a chance to play in the NHL with your brother is pretty f'n special if you ask me, let alone with the idea you might hoist a cup together. At the time this wasn't that far fetched, that they could accomplish this. Brothers, playing out their life long dreams together was gained. That's what was gained. How many times, when they were kids, do you think they pretended they were on the same team in the NHL and winning the cup together? Its special, man.
The injuries and horrible things that happened outside of hockey are random and if you think a professional athlete choosing where he wants to play, and especially when there's family involved influencing said decision, make him deserving of the horrible things that happened to him, then you need help. |
