Jack and Meg were living off food banks when they first got started... Practically all of Jack's early guitars were things he got for free when he worked for Goodwill. The lo-fi style really worked for The White Stripes.

You see Jack with a lot of high-dollar guitars now. Fame (and the cash that comes with it) will do that to you.
