Results from the NHLPA players's poll are coming in as we speak.
This should bring some fun discussions. |

The thing you were missing in this equation was a metric poop ton of drugs. Then you would've reached rockstar status and the strap wouldn't have broken because science. |

This is an interesting conversation to me. I think you could be right in that prices may affect the younger generation's attendance. So will comprehension.
When I was little and just starting to watch hockey, you really only had Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. The broadcasters certainly liked the Habs, but the bias wasn't anything like you see today. They called the game and instructed you on the game as it went. I remember understanding the basic premise of the rules in pretty much no time, and I had a clear understanding of a penalty, and even how Refs would go about making certain judgement calls.
These days, after over 40 years of watching hockey, I wonder how CLEAR icing calls are. How CLEAR a penalty call is? Especially when you have regional broadcasters who muddy the waters of what a good call is with home-team biases.
I honestly think things like this hurt the game - because you never fully get passionate about it.
As a related example, my wife and I had seasons tickets to the Toronto Rock for nearly a decade. In that time, I was never 100% certain what was and wasn't a penalty and why sometimes plays were stopped with a change in possession. I understood the root behind the rule, but never knew when I was allowed to be outraged by a missed call. Or even if a call was missed.
As such, I could get into the emotional draw of the game, and the excitement. But it was NEVER anything like hockey, where you just _know_ the game. - Monkeypunk
Remember Howie Meeker breaking down plays?
Peter Puck explaining the simple rules of the game?
Hell yes, they break out the telestrator every game now days, but the systems are so complex now, it's probably too complex for kids to grasp the simple concepts.
I coach kids, I I've stopped telling the kids to watch NHL hockey to watch what players do. It's simply not realistic.
That's why I love the women's game - a slower pace, so the kids can actually watch what is going on, and it's much more applicable to what I want them to do in their game on Sunday morning at Ted Reeve Arena.
You watch a women's Olympic game, and the US and Canadian teams are soooooo technically perfect. Hell, maybe a little too perfect. |
