Hughes to me is the one really getting giant expectations placed on him, like at this point if he turned out to be a Tyson Barrie/Ryan Ellis player I think some people would be disappointed.

I would be thrilled if he could turn out too be a Ryan Ellis calibre player.😁

Two of my faves. Ellis is pretty dam good, and quinn is a better skater than him already. That would be a guy to show him in terms of tape. He and spurgeon.

I agree, but the player you describe doesn't sound like a 3M+ player and I'm afraid to think what he'll look like as he gets older

Benning is improving on his payment for 4th liners, Beagle makes half of what his linemate, Loui makes.👍

You realize there's still some here who think we're making the playoffs right?

Same, but man some media/fans are talking about him like he's going to be a 24-25 min a night type of player on a good team, conveniently overlooking his size/defensive ability.

But man it'll be nice to finally have an offensive dman back there

It would be so much nicer to just have another couple of Motte type players on the 4th line instead and have that extra $7M to use elsewhere

That’s fair. I think we’ve all known he’s overpaid since the hop. Luckily it’s not for much term. Imo this batch of ufas was JBs best.

The defensive ability does actually seem to be there though. The size certainly isnt. I kind of hope he goes the Subban route abd eats an entire cow over the summer

Someone on here (won’t say who) mentioned they would be happy if Hughes turned out to be a “Lidstrom type player”.

Happy? Lol.

If he doesn’t measure up as Bobby Orr, then he is a flat out bust, and Benning will be burned in effigy.

His defense is actually really solid against the rush, but from what I've seen/read, he struggles once the opposing team establishes zone time/cycle.

Stecher has done a nice job this year defensively so Quinn could even learn a thing or 2 from his own undersized teammate.

Benning talked quite a bit, last season, about how hard it was to get a PP defenseman, that is all I am expecting from Hughes, if he exceeds those expectations, bonus.

Zero expectations the next 2-3 years, if he earns a roster spot next year great. If not that's okay as well.

this was my expectation with Pettersson last year. Tempering expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than hope and expect the moon and be disgruntled ( the latter seems to be the norm for this fanbase)

I find it fun to watch these kids find their way in the NHL, they need to keep the pressure of them and let them develop properly.

Easier to forgive when the guy actually produces goals/points and is only in his 2nd year coming off of a serious injury.

dude definitely needs to work on his back checking though, I think he's been getting a bit better at it lately.

- Nucker101

I believe Ray Ferraro said the other day that every player doesn't have to be a 200 ft monster. Boeser's scoring rate is good enough to not have to be the 200 ft monster like Sutter and Beagle.

Barrie is 9th in scoring right now, Krug 12th, Spurgeon 16th, Ellis 26th.

Spurgeon is 16th in TOI, Ellis is 17th both 24 minutes a night. Barrie and Krug 62 and 66th at 21:30 respectively.

I honestly don't think anyone would be disappointed if he turned out to be like any of those players.
