Botts assembled a team he thought could at the very least compete. As soon as the whole Berglund fiasco happened and he realized he didn’t have an adequate 2nd line option to insulate Mitts he probbaly started choking his chicken to the thought of Turcotte/Zegras/Boldy with a lotto shot at Hughes/Kakko.

On December 15th, the Sabres were one point behind the Leafs for 2nd in the division. If Botts thought that Berglund’s departure would precipitate a fall to the absolute bottom of the league by season’s end, then he’s not the optimist he gets credit for. He’s the worst kind of pessimist.

Or, you might just be inflating Berglund’s value to the team. He’s not the difference between 2nd in the division and fifth worst record in the league.
