I don't know how you could justify the ROR trade at this point. It doesn't look good and the 1st could go to Anaheim. The other pieces are garbage. Tage could develop but who knows. I just don't like it.
The Skinner trade looks good but if we overpay him on a long term contract, does that make the trade not as shiny? How would that trade look if we pay Skinner 9 a year? Will that effectively hurt our cap so we can't go after other players in free agency or make other moves?
The Montour trade looks good for us in the short term but the Ducks getting a 1st and Guhle helps them in the long term. I do like what Botts did here though.
The Sheary trade was ok but would have rather not have it included Hunwick. Not awful by any means.
I'm just trying to look at these moves with some reason and objectivity.
Should Botts have signed Brandon Hagel who is tearing up the WHL? Why didn't he make a move during the 10 game winning streak? Could he have been more active at the trade deadline? He missed on signing some college free agents, notably Hirose and Duszak.
I hope he does well in the summer. - mhp
totally right here with you.... He better make smart moves this summer or we will be rebuilding again for the 3rd time with a new GM next year.
Last years purging of dead weight did nothing..... the whole Skinner thing is starting to look bad too. If Skinner walks, look out because I'll be first in line with the pitchfork and torch.
Montour seems like it might be a good trade, he get a good trade there but that's it for now. it looking more and more that St Louis pick is going to the ducks. |

We'll we find out this year if Beane is a real GM... that the plus side.. and I do like the moves for the most part. He's got no place to hide if tall these guy fall flat on their face. if their are more winners then losers we should at least be fun to watch again. Allen improving (or Not) will tell us where we are by years end.
Beane does seem to draft really well, unlike the bozos running the sabres. |

How so? As close as they are to the top 10, they're even closer to 14th overall. |

Murray drafted him and Botts passed and Chicago signed him. Last I looked he had 41 goals and 61 assists. And he plays physical, something we need. - mhp
And when Botts passed on him he was coming of a 59 point season and not even in the top 50 scorers. Not to mention he was 20 y/o in a league that has kids as young as 15 playing. |

I hope he does as well, but it won't be easy with so many of these same players under contract for next year. JB is well known for his patience, caution, and belief in Phil Housley.
Botts paid a steep price for Montour, who after a hot start has been sorta average here. Sheary/Hunwick seem like a favor to his old team for their cap problems. And if Skinner walks for nothing, then what was the point? Getting him a nice contract elsewhere?
JB's drafting seems on-point, so hopefully he hangs on to the two firsts. |

Drafting wins cups. The ROR trade is really the only trade you can say “what the frank” were you thinking. Not having ROR this year is going to allow us to pick top 7 by the looks of it. The top 7 pick makes us better long term then ROR does. Thompson needs to add 20 pounds and work with a shooting coach. It’s sad people are anointing a trade after one season but it is what it is. We are better long term with a top 7 pick then ROR. Hopefully Thompson, the Blues first rounder (whether it ultimately is Montour or we draft with it), and the 2nd rounder in 2021 can be contributors or be used to bring in contributors for long term. |

I may be the biggest anti DK guy on here. Kyle Williams MUST be replaced. And there are a bunch of options. Bills still have holes, and DK is just Mr. Badhands. So was big ol' Kelvin |

If Skinner walks, that is a disaster. Without Skinner all year and replacing him with more Remi Elie or whoever, that top 7 pick is a top 3. |

Sheary trade and Hagel are outside, so I just removed that for brevity.
Whether we traded RoR for the 1st in return or RoR and Guhle for Montour in return, it doesn't effect the overall value much to me. I like Montour, so if part of the RoR return is used to get him, great.
Whether you like it or not overall, let me just point out there are a number of things this trade did for us that aren't in the trade details:
1) We saved a lot of money. (Berglund helps but after next season we already lost 3M from Crapotka either way)
2) We got to acquire Skinner (After our last place finish, I can't imagine that Botts would have traded for Skinner knowing he wouldn't have the money to resign him). Getting Sobotka's 3M off of RoR's price tag this following season allowed this)
3) Gave us futures (We have Tage, Montour/1st and a 2nd for long term help)
When you look at it this way it sucks:
RoR for Berglund, Sobotka, Tage, 1st and a 2nd
It looks much better like this, which was the actual outcome of the trade:
RoR, Pu, Guhle, 2nd, 4th for Skinner, Montour, 2 year cap dump, Tage and a 2nd (all while saving between 4-7.5M for the next 4 seasons)
If Tage stays Tage, Montour falls off, Skinner signs for 15M and the 2nd rounder busts...sure that is an awful trade. My point is simply that we won't know the actual outcome or value of this trade for about 2 years. Until then, it saved us money gave us futures and allowed us to get Jack a real winger. It's a gamble well taken IMO.
Let me ask, would you have accepted RoR + Guhle for Skinner + Montour? |

59 points for a 6th rd pick isn't too shabby. And they could have signed him to an AHL contract, like they did with Glotov. |
