More the problem is Toronto expects and demands its goalies always cover and shore everything up for the shoddy play of the team in front of them. It goes back to Palmeteer, Potvin, and only got worse as we got veteran goalies like Cujo and Belfour etc etc etc... it is always the goalies fault in Toronto for not carrying the team again and again and again.
They're the last line of defence not the only one. This team needs to learn some responsible play in their own end, stop relying on the goalie to cover up for them all the time and enough playing rec league pond hockey out there.
Freddy ain't the problem. - Roadrunner75
In our defence, there was a brief period of time where we blamed Larry Murphy instead of the goalies. |

We all loved and idolized Jussi Rynnas, he was never blamed for anything. That one loss he had as a Leaf, was all Dion Phaneuf's fault. |

I've repressed every playoff series against Boston so I don't really remember... wasn't he quite good in one of them?? |

I believe he was very good vs Boston in 2013 despite the epic collapse in game 7. |

Freddy is partially the problem. The Leafs system is too open and based on the fact that they expect the goalie to make those saves. You open up to create offense. Babcock might talk about how he'd like more defensive structure, but if that was the case, his wingers wouldn't fly the zone before we even have puck possession. Even when they're in the zone, they're basically useless or positioned for transition, not defensive support. Hell, on Philly's third goal yesterday, both Johnsson and Nylander were just passengers on the side-wall while the puck was moved to the point with impunity.
If that's our system, then we need Freddy to be better, because that's what it relies on. I'm not saying it's fair, but I'm saying it's what us got us here.
If we want a different system that doesn't rely on Freddy, then they need to change their style of play completely. Stop being lazy. Tighten up. Rely on the bomb pass occasionally, but not consistently. Get involved. Put your body in the way of the player, and so on. I don't see ANY of that of late. |

People kiss Freddie's ass a lot, but he has such long, horrible stretches during each season that costs the team points - RogerRoeper
Even Price sucks when his team lets everyone through. The movement of the D is brutal. They cover the wrong guys or prioritize the wrong area of the ice. Even Reilly was lobbing some pucks up to his blue line last night, right to the attacker's stick. They need to stop panicking in their own end and play with a little confidence. |

That (frank)ing goal where he was anticipating Rielly's pass behind the net, while leaving the entire crease unprotected, was outrageous
It was a puck battle. It wasn't like Rielly was coming away with that 9 out of 10 times - RickJames77
Rielly was there 1st but who cares, easier to blame Hainsey since it's his last year.

The toughest position in pro sports mentally. You can stop 20 prime shots but let in a softy and that's what fans remember. |

if the Leafs are healthy and we get Muzzin/Rielly/Dermott/Gardiner for the whole series I feel they have a decent chance. the odds makers have it at basically a coin flip.
a few other things that are encouraging is the Matthews is heating up. Freddy tends to go up and down, he has been down for a bit now..but he also tends to bounce back with elite numbers. Can only hope he is back to steal a few games.

No, the fact that he's about to grab a set of boobies.
Edit: although I guess that's a reference to a Clockwork Orange.

Anybody else wonder why Babcock (stop whining and play your best players) was playing Hainsey on 3 on 3. Absolutely (frank)ing brutal. - 5Hole Mgee
Because Rielly had already been on the ice, and since Dermott and Gardiner are injured, he's probably the best choice at that point.
Scary, I know.
