The problem is that the poopty RD aren't being given any outlet option. Everybody is flying the coop way too soon in anticipation of a stretch pass that the RD simply can't make. If the RW was to commit to staying back that would give the option of a short pass which isn't on now. As it stands, all the F1 needs to do is cut off the D to D pass and the only option left for RD is to fire it 100' or more up the boards as there's no other option.

What compounds the situation is that it's ALWAYS the RD that's the weakest one for the Leafs - teams can commit to that play, because it doesn't matter who is playing that side.

Loving how this is going so far!!

I've been saying this for ages. The Leafs D aren't really the problem. You can pretty much win with that D. The forwards are the problem. There's no difference between 95% of the dmen in the NHL. There's a vast difference in how they look depending on the team's style of play.

I think the ability to move the puck up fast and effectively to the forwards has been emphasized in the past few years.

Guys like Dermott will thrive and be instant top 4 D just based on their ability to move the puck up and skate out of trouble.

With that being said having a Marincin/Oz pair kills them. They can’t play with the talent they have. And it has showed.

It's a shame, as there could still be that potential with the LW.

The LW is high giving a chance for a stretch pass if the ice is open, and also to beat out any icing. The RW is instead deep to retrieve and carry if there's no stretch. All of our W are fast enough that they can create space for themselves and others - all that's missing is that clean zone exit and transition.

Looking forward to not seeing those dumb canes celebrations anymore....or actually hearing about them.
