Many reasons:

Jack knows Hayes, Boston boys
For other FAs, we are close to Canada (home)
We have tons of Swedes and the best one in 20 years, Swedes may come for that
Playing time - if anyone isn't signing their last contract, their production will matter. Skinner probably came here to get a good contract playing with Jack. AKA the Eichel effect. Same reason I could see a guy like Copp or Donskoi signing with us, we would give them a lot more minutes than elsewhere.

Money is just another reason. We offer another year of term or another 1M is one thing, but remember there are a lot of teams that are subtracting, not adding. It isn't like WPG and TO are going to be bidding on these guys. The market is limited in a sense. I can't say that we are near the top by any means, but the "why would someone come here" stuff is overly pessimistic.

Edit: I'd add that we still have a very young core, another top draft pick coming and will be trending up moving forward. Argue all you want, we are going to start improving here soon.

He paid less than what Myers paid. I think Myers paid $1.7 and sold to ROR for $1.4.

The last really big free agent signing in Buffalo was who, Okposo? That did not work out so well. Other then that I can't really think of a top tier FA coming here. We get all of the better players via trade...

Depends on your opinion of overpaying.

Overpaying to me is paying more than any other team to entice someone to sign.

That we can't do. However, I wouldn't say with guys like JVR and Tavares that it is only about reclamation projects/3rd tier guys and I don't believe them to be massively overpaid for what they bring. Karlsson is that guy this year. Hayes is the Bozak IMO.

No trick.

Pilut had multiple teams trying to sign him.

There aren't a lot of top tier FAs. Two or three each year. Makes sense we don't get one every year, no team does. Furthermore, Okposo having his brain fried doesn't discount the fact that he was one of the top FAs of the class and chose to sign here, despite having a "similar deal in place" with another team reportedly.

Edit: You really didn't answer the question though. What has changed since last year, in your mind, that puts us in a different place? We're the same bad team Okposo decided to sign for...
