I'm talking about playing the percentages. Give yourself the better odds. That's all.

I get it . I still don't think I would tank a year to worry about who I am drafting at 86 th instead of 92

It's still dumb to give a 3rd year cap hit at $6M. Pay more for 2 seasons, he still wants to be here and we still need him. At the end of that deal, he's a UFA there's no protection required.

Having his cap hit exceed his value hurts in year 3, not before IMO. He WANTS to play in Vancouver, and he can sign his 3rd year deal as a UFA.

Edler walks: Very happy to move on
Edler signs for 1 season: Good deal for the Canucks. I have no problem
Edler signs 2 years and no NMC: It could have been worse... but we will survive
Edler signs 3 years: This is not good for the Canucks future, I'm upset.
Someone being exposed to protect Edler: Throws Canucks lighter away

Nah, keep the owner out of it.

Also, both parties need to evaluate his value at the time. I doubt he'll be any less than bottom pairing.

So the 2 year extension beyond that will be about loyalty & mentorship?

Agents get paid a percentage of the contract they negotiate for their client. Negotiating a one year contract 3 times is more work than doing one 3 year deal.

They'd position it as "doing what's best for your family". More security for the wife & kids and greater chance you'll still be playing if they sign you for three years instead of 2. If you're injured then they may not re-sign you again in 2 years and risk losing $6MM. (Not to mention $500K in commission for your wonderful agent.)

You are right.

I wouldn't give a 2 year deal after this one. Year to year, he's about to turn 33.

I'm with you. I'd rather us win or lose as long as it's entertaining. If I had to watch us throw in the towel from the beginning or after TDL I probably would have stopped watching.

For that to happen either OJ plays great or a UFA bumps him. As for FA out of it fine.

I can get over no Edler if someone provides what our D looks like in 2-3yrs.

Exactly. Plus he plays his best on expiring years. Getting 2 birds stoned at once.

Benning has all the leverage in this negotiation with Edler. Make him the lowest priority signing this offseason. Double back at the very end and see if you even think you need his services. Absolutely no point in making Edler anything but the lowest priority for getting him signed.
- Codes1087

I think he should tell Alex to take some time off and come in and talk to him in the summer, with his agent. Have an open dialogue, negotiate.

If he gets a deal he likes better elsewhere, good for him. I doubt he leaves Vancouver without checking in since i sincerely believe he wants to be here.

I disagree. You need to explain your offer of 2 years, tell him what your plans are in 2 years.
- golfingsince

I would say to Edler if I was Jim "look, we aren't going to the cup finals in the next 2 years, but you will play top 2/top 4, mentor Hughes and whoever else comes up, get some PP time, and after the expansion, we can discuss 1 year contracts depending on how you are holding up"

then after his 2 years are up, change your phone number or respond with "new phone who dis" every time his agent calls/texts

This was a good progression year. I have to be careful because some people think I think this is a good team (from last thread.)

I like cheering our wins but I still think we could miss the playoffs next year. I think eventually the core will mature and it will be a good team then. Like Sedin said we felt comfortable in about year 6 or 7 .

But I hope they win every game and I am done with Tanking.

Exactly... JB shouldnt feel threatened by July 1st. If Eddy wants to stay he can stay... but he wants a market deal and expect JB to sacrifice a younger player. May as well replace Edler in a trade if it comes down to that or just keep the younger player.

Agreed, I was being facetious.
I really hope the delay is because Benning if offering 2 and won't budge beyond that.

We shouldn't have to protect him, so the 3rd year is off the table.

There are so many young players in the line up now. Every win against a playoff team is confidence in spades. We want winners... well let them win.

To be honest, Green was pushing way harder for wins months ago than he was in late Feb and March when they were still in reach of a wildcard. Kids keep winning anyways.

I still think Edler is a good asset for us, but the only way he has any value is in re-signing him. His protection from being traded/claimed comes in the form of UFA status.

Unfortunately, Edler wants nothing to do that.

It was a strange year up and down. I liked what I seen though so I walk away a satisfied customer.

I think JB probably feels threatened about job security. If they don’t make the playoffs next season he is gone. They need Edler to be competitive. So I disagree that Edler has no leverage.

I'm impressed with Boeser's surge late in the season. Young leadership emerging.
