The reason Botts put the stipulation of 20th or higher is because the general consensus believes that players ranked between 20-35 or so are basically the same, developmentally. Choose your style of player, choose your position, but they're all 2-3 years out, all have flaws and all have around the same overall talent/skill level.
I'm pretty confident the Sharks will disappoint as usual. Those picks will be similar, I'd bet. - TheSabresTaco
It wouldn't be all that surprising if the Sharks lost in the first round and the Blues advanced although I'm not sure how that would affect which pick goes to the Ducks. |

non-playoffs are record based, playoffs are based on wins and losses in each round, combined with standing in reg season. - TheSabresTaco
Wait, draft position is not based on regular season for everyone? It's been so long since we were a playoff team I forgot how this stuff works. So if the Blues get bounced in the first round we could end up with a pick in the high teens? Something to root for in the playoffs. |

I don't think that helps us. If the Blues pick is #20 or higher the Ducks have the option to take it. If the Sharks pick is lower, they keep it.

Yeah, I hear you. But it's a pretty deep draft and if someone Botts ranked higher and falls and then we miss him by a pick or two, that will stink. Maybe just par for the course around here. - Chris16
If it's that small of a gap, 2-3 picks, and Botts REALLY feels that player is going to be leagues better than the next few guys, I have no doubt he'll make a trade and throw a third and their 1st in to move up a few spots. |

No. Same as in football. Patriots rarely have the best record in the league. But they're usually drafting last.
Really your best bet is rooting for the teams playing the Sharks and Blues, but especially against the Blues. If they lose round 1, they could be pick 16-18. |

The NHL is a little different if I remember. Something along the lines of teams that lose if you lose in the first round, it doesn't exactly seed that way. If a 1 seed loses, they aren't slotted into the worst of the first round exiters position. I think, and I very well could be wrong, that the first two rounds (Not Conference finals) are weighted by season rankings. So if a 1 seed loses, they are picking around 27, pending if the other 1 seed loses as well.
Edit: This years example: TBL lose in the first round to the CBJ. There would be 8 teams left. 31 - 8 = 23. Line of thinking would be they would get the 23rd pick. But if I'm correct, they would actually get the 27th pick as the best team in the reg season this year that didn't make a CF. |

Isn't the final draft order dependent upon playoff results for all playoff teams, or is only some subset of them? - IonSabres
Taco - thanks, you are right, I just wanted a bit more definition.
Draft Order: The 14 teams who did not make the playoffs are eligible for the draft lottery, with the teams with lower total regular sesason points receiving more number combinations, and the winner gets the first overall pick. The rest of the picks are determined by reverse order of elimination from the playoffs, with the Stanley Cup winner receiving the last pick. For teams that were eliminated in the same round, the teams with the lower regular season point total gets the higher pick. All of the subsequent rounds are ordered in the same manner
Ideally for Sabres the, Sharks and Blues 1st round exits! |

I’ve had this same thought, but everyone I hear and read that covers Rochester said he really wasn’t playing great up until mid season.
I’m just happy he’s here now and looks good |
