Technically they were paid $9 mil this year. Okposo $6 mil and Moulson $3 mil. - dadeadhead

i was really surprised by how well that worked out. They were both significantly better than Lydman and Tallinder in the years that followed |

I will be happy, don't get me wrong. I don't care who the new coach is. I don't care who the new player is. The team is so flawed that another kid alone will not fix it. It'll be progress though. |

we need a coach who is smart, innovative, communicative, adaptable and accountable.
We need players who are not negative impact players. At least six forwards harm this team, and at least 3 dmen harm this team. I expect the goaltending to even out next year. These three defensemen account for 15M. Find 3 that don't harm your team. Find forwards who are intelligent and can carry play. They don't all need to be 50 point forwards. But having a couple Jason Pominville types (30-40 pts, intelligent, carries possession) is what you're looking for.
Okposo isn't going anywhere. You need at least 15 more points out of him next year.
Sobotka, Girgensons, Wilson sink the team. So do Bogo, Scnadella and Risto. That's a lot of minutes. If you can find a better version of Larsson for a half mil more, do it. Jesus. |

I think if nothing else the focus should be subtraction. They can't come back with all of
Scandella
Ristolainen
Bogosian
Okposo
Sobotka
Girgensons
I get that they can't move all of them, but you can't bring all of them back. They just can't. |

The goalies were the most "negative" impact position.
Lehner last year had a GSAA(goals saved above average) of -5.5
Hutton was -12, Ullmark -6
The expected goals against numbers for the sabres hasn't changed all that much from last year to this year.
The only way these two put up okay numbers is if you ice nothing but two way forwards and stay at home d-men. Take any sort of risk offensively and they won't make the big save.

Sobriety?
Hutton outside of 30 games with the tightest blue line in the nhl has been a meh back up.
Ullmarks a failed project. They need at least 1 new goalie. Enough to buy time for UPL |

In New York, there is a better defensive system and Lehner has come to the rink fully prepared to earn his pay cheque. |

Nothing to back this up at all, but one observation.
Given that the Sabres seemed to be playing man on man defense, can't we expect fewer goals with a new defensive system in place? I'm not saying playoffs by any stretch, but I'd think they'd get a little better. |

You could, but that would also likely mean fewer goals for. For example, they could hire Boucher and go all 1-3-1 for 55 minutes like he did with tampa years ago. The goalies would appear great, but thats only because the team has stopped playing offense.
If you're going to run a blue line that has Montour, Dahlin and Pilut on it, you are probably not going try to "lock it down" as they say. |

As the season went along he seemed to wander further and further away from the crease. |
