Buying out Shatty's remaining 2 years of his annual $6,65M contract is a must to create a spot for further growth of their youth on the back line. Smith's improved play as a team oriented playing d'man who can also fill in as a forward, may have also sealed Shatty's fate, should Smith not be dealt via his M-NTC.
In Shatty's 2 seasons worth of 119 games played with the Rangers, his combined numbers alone warrant his buyout, in tallying only 7-G & 44-A for 51 PTS, while having a (-29) overall +/- rating. They appear even worse when splitting them among the Rangers 53 Wins and 66 Losses (incl. 14 OTL's) that he has played in.
If the team was ready to compete no way do I want Strome as the 2C. Have to hope Chytil grows into that spot. Center depth is still weak with this team. That was the issue I foresaw with getting rid of Hayes (Although it was probably the right move). You have a number 1 and a couple 3/4 s right now - mdw7413
I get the hesitation with Strome, but he has hit 50 points in his career and with 2 playmakers on his wing hopefully he can do it again. I think they want Chytil on the wing but who knows.

David Quinn said that the organization forsees Chytil as a future center but still may play wing for periods next year

I just don't trust Strome. I mean it was his rookie season I believe when he had those career highs, been about 4 years since. Maybe we will get lucky and he just gels with this team for whatever reason. Hoping for the best but not betting on it.

How comfortable would everyone be with Strome as the 2C? Give him Panarin and Kravtsov and have a 1A/1B line with the other line having Zib and Kreider - nyrangers9479
For the $$, would rather give Strome a shot over Hayes. Stromes' numbers may improve significantly with better, more talented wingers too.

Worst case he’s a 3rd line player with upside, not bad for Ryan Spooner. I think he finally figured it out though, he looked great that 2nd half of the season.
Rozsival was pretty solid for us. Though I just looked back at his stats, he didn't do quite as well for us as I thought I remembered. Though I guess he doesn't count as a huge name either. - 2sticks1puck
Rozsival and James Patrick were two of the Rangers better d'men in those past decades who were treated very unfairly by much of their fan base, as some had done in more recent times with Dan Girardi for some unknown reason, despite him being thee team warrior, including a fearless shot blocker.

Oh yeah, I'm not advocating getting rid of Strome, and the Spooner trade was ridiculous in hindsight, I just don't know if Strome continues the pace he was on into next year. I believe his shooting % was ridiculously high

Rosi got his revenge for all those boos. He has a couple rings from his days with the Hawks and can tell everyone to suck it

It was. I'm not a huge advance stats guy, but even I know that you can't sustain the pace he did. He would have to improve greatly even just to back up this year's stats, let alone get better.

I don't get the hesitation for keeping Strome, who for some good reason was drafted 5th overall by the Isles in 2011, ahead of Zibanejad at 6th by the Sens, and has now seemed to find his game again as a Ranger, in also taking on additional defensive roles up front.

Because the other side of the coin is maybe a team bites while you can sell high, with the odds being he won't be as good next year

Strome is a perfectly fine bottom 6 guy. He isn't scoring that much again unless he greatly improves. No one can shoot 22% like he did last season on a consistent basis. Every metric that counts screams 30 pt player. His trade value will never by higher.

Your right about that, and don't forget that Rozsival was also a mainstay and minutes eater for 2 seasons on the back line of those top Coyotes teams about 7 or 8 years ago. You don't last just shy of 1,000 career games as an NHL d'man without being a plus contributor in more ways than one.

I agree with you, as I saw that "mdw" also stated that they can sell high while Strome's price is high now, (as with Georgiev), although his peak price still may have not been reached. Some players in any sport blossom later than when they first began their pro career. That's where I feel Strome is at this point, and unless overwhelmed with a trade offer, I would retain him in his contract year to see if his game improves even greater this season. If it should, he could then yield an even better return as at least a rental by next season's trade deadline, should the Rangers decide not to offer him a new contract, pending the play of others.
