I know it's highly unlikely, but the leafs cap situation reminds of the hawks way back when.

Sharks used the offer sheet to force bowman to part ways with niemii (after the arbitration number came in), who i guess was there intended target.

I wonder if something similar can be done with Marner/Johnsson. Force the leafs to capitulate to whatever Marner's ask is, then when Johnsson gets his # from arb, leafs won't be able to sign him

If I’m mariner I’m asking for 12m they will likely trade Nylander and probably hoping Johnsson gets a offer sheet or just pay him 4-5m short term

Stone is better now, but that contract is horrendous, he will fall off, much sooner and harder than Skinner.

Stone is an elite 2way player
I’d even put him on the level of Bergeron

Been doing some thinking with respect to Trading Risto.

One of the things that could work in the Sabres favor is the Lightning getting bounced in the playoffs especially with the way CBus is beating them in the physicality department...not like the Caps did last year, but clearly a stronger team taking it to the Lightning.

I could see their brass discussing the need for more truculence in the line-up...Risto's toughness would be desired. Tampa also could benefit from
-additional Cap space
-getting younger and cheaper by replacing the likes of aged players in
-Stralman (32,$4.5m, UFA),
-Girardi (34,$3.0m, UFA), and
-Colburn (33,$3.7m,UFA)
-Callahan, 33, $5.8m, 1 yr)

What do you think about Sabres trading
- Risto (24, 5/38/43, $5.4m, 3 yrs)
- Nelson (26, 1/5/6, $825k, UFA)
- ERod (22, 9/20/29, $650k, RFA
To Lightning for
-Anthony Cirelli (21, 19/20/39, $750k, 1 yr)
-Ryan Callahan (33, 7/10/17, $5.8m, 1 yr)
-Mathiue Joseph (21, 13/13/26, $750, 1yr)

Value to Lightning is
-getting rid of Callahan's contract
-replacing 2 aged Dmen with 2 RhD's...assuming Callahan and Risto's contracts are a wash, the 2 dmen enables them to walk away from 3 of those dmen and $11.2m with Cal Foote coming up soon
-adding toughness on the back end
-backfilling the loss of Cirelli with a capable 3C in ERod who plays with speed and can pot 15+

Sabres get
-A young, productive 2C in Cirelli
-A young, speedy winger in Joseph ready to breakout
- a serviceable 4th liner in Callahan for 1 season who is a locker room leader...a positive influence the team needs in a big way.
