and how many of those coaches took their team from nowhere to win a cup?

Julien, Laviolette and Burns?

anyone could have won with those other stacked teams, and we are not a stacked team

- homiedclown

I mean I answered the question. Who's to say we don't become a stacked team in two years.

Good question. Darryl Sutter. Joel Qunneville. Barry Trotz. Claude Julien. Peter Laviolette. Pat Burns.

That's all from this century.

- TheSabresTaco

Laviolette wasn't a retread.

Dude had only coached 2.5 seasons before the year he won the cup.

Hasn't won one since (Been to the finals twice, though.

I think we can all admit he's a good coach, and he was with the Islanders I believe. Housley gets retread status now.

I'm with ya there. Botterill has many GM things to do to get this team out of the gutter.

Bottom line, there is no one set formula and while everyone on here has their preferences, no one knows how any of these coaches will do with the roster Botterill gives him next October.

He spent two seasons with the Isles, making the playoffs both times with Jason (frank)ing Blake as his leading scorer.

He's a great coach. But I think you have to have several years in the NHL (Or have already coached the same team once before) to be considered a retread.

100%

God only knows what the Sabres are going to look like come October. There's a lot of work to be done.

and the last thing he needs to worry about is having another rookie nhl coach trying to figure it out on the fly...

that said, i'm not opposed to gronborg...in fact he should probably be no. 3 on their list:

fwiw, Button seems to think Martin is just a non starter in the coaching search. Same with Lindy

I bet if you had a fan poll between AV, McClellan and Lindy, a plurality of fans would go Lindy

yeah, they need more talent, but one of the admitted issues they had was the lack of defensive structure, which was painfully obvious to those of us who watched a ton of goals-against come from players wide open in prime scoring areas...

that was on housley

I'd put them all pretty close. Lindy probably falls between AV and McClellan. Lindy has 1 SCF to to AV's 2. He has less prestige after Dallas.

He's no worse of a choice than either of the other 2 though imo

UPL with 60 saves in a 3-2 triple-overtime loss vs. the Ottawa 67's...Sudbury loses the series 4-0

It surprised me a lot, because it was one thing Steve Smith was really good at in Raleigh. The Canes weren't very good, but they were always extremely structured.

am getting the impression that Housley was the mastermind of that system, that's why he's gone...in the friedman piece, he said it's believed they want to retain smith

They've been there and done that with Teddy. They're not gonna do it again. I'm just saying I don't think it would be a ridiculous decision
