That's true, but Kucherov doesn't even take up 12% of Tampa's cap on his big deal next year. Toronto will likely have 3 players at around 14%. Tavares is 13.8%, Matthews is 14.63%, and Marner likely comes in right around there, maybe around 13% if they do some fancy footwork, but that could also come back to bite them on the ass if they don't lock him up.

Matthews is invisible for 60/82 games in the regular season as well. Guy is an elite goal scorer though I’ll give him that. It just bothers me when people think he’s better then Eichel.

The Sabres scored 16 more goals then the Stars did this year. Scored two less goals then the Isles. Both playoff teams. Interesting.

He’s definitely an elite goal scorer, but it’s odd to pay 11.6 mil per season for arguably your 3rd best player.

If taking back Callahan enhances the return, do it as his contract ends after next season.

So one of two things needs to happen. We need to score in the top 10, or we need to have a goals against in the top 10. The team lacks an identity. We don’t score enough and we give up too many goals. Something needs to change or else I’m already scouting top 10 picks for next year.

With TB’s cap issues why would they deal two young cost controlled scorers.

They’ll trade high paid scorers for picks and young talent first.

Your question is valid.
In my "proposal", by acquiring 2 Dmen and promoting 1 from the AHL Crunch they can walk away from $11.2m currently tied up in 3 Dmen who are 32, 33 and 34.
Furthermore, the Callahan dump enables them to get Risto as a wash.
ERod replaces Cirelli for say $300k more.
That leaves them to replace Joseph from their farm of which they have a couple guys ready-sh.

The net affect is they save about $9.5M to enable them to resign Point.
They probably still will need to shed Tyler Johnsons contract as well...but he is too old at 28 in view of his remaining 5 year contract term.

Man, Boston/Toronto is getting nasty...
