My concerns/thoughts....
1) I fully expect Sullivan to start the season as the HC, but I do expect him to be on a short leash, so this isn't a concern.
2) Rash trades, i.e. moving both Maatta and Kessel.
3) While I'm happy with Gudbranson, there's only room for one of Gudbranson and Johnson on this team. If they move Maatta and run with this group they are even more removed from the identity that gave them success.
4) My hopes are that a season off for Hornqvist brings him back because he looks like a shell of the player he was prior to the injuries this season, because unless he retires, he's going nowhere.
The issues here is it would be easy to move Maatta and VERY difficult to move Johnson if even possible at all. I like Gudbranson, but if they are going to keep Johnson they need to move Gudbranson who might actually have real value now.
IMO the sad reality is this roster is likely to stay very similar for the next five years. - Rinosaur
I wonder if JR kept his first because he knew he was gonna to have to use it to get rid of JJ. |

Something as a fan that I kind of brushed by the wayside was how the Pens finished the season. In hindsight they looked like they kind of lost their urgency. While yes, they secured a playoff spot you look at the teams they struggled against that could have placed them in 2nd.
Now, while 2nd would have still placed them against the Isles, it's the effort we saw at the end that was telling. |

I'm not looking forward to this off-season. They should be finding a way to move Johnson and Hornqvist, but they will likely be moving Maatta and Kessel.
It's not that I think Hornqvist is a major blight on this team, but at this point if his space was opened up they could ATTEMPT to find a younger version of Hornqvist.

They battled back and rallied to take the last game of the season to OT. Also need to consider the big name players just coming back from injuries and missing weeks. Hard for returning players to just totally jive and gel right away. |

Dude, it was the Rangers they battled back to take to OT. Yes, I made excuses because the Rangers beat some good teams down the stretch, but come on. Don't act like they came back against the Bruins or something.
They also got spanked by the Wings. |

Not the Bruins, no, but speaking of them, they had just ended the Bruins 19 game point streak a few weeks before though.
The Wings were beating the Sharks, Golden Knights and Bruins the week before playing the Pens twice, were the hottest team in the league. They won one 4-1 and lost one 4-1 to the Pens. |

I will say this that I still fear the pens cause they can change a series around quick. If they get that one win under their belt then this could become a series quickly.
I also like to say before this series started I said regular season stats and this corsi crap goes out the window and well look where we are |

5v5
Isles shooting percentage - 11.27%
Pens shooting percentage - 3.61%
That’s the story right there.
I’m more of a scoring chance/high danger guy than corsi guy. And both of those categories are fairly even. Pens can’t buy a goal right now. |

I have noticed like one poster said it seems sids line is just waiting for him to do something. The Kessel lime I have been impressed with but besides that I don’t know what is going. They are not coming out flying and they seem so frustrated that it’s like they just want to go home. I have never seen the pens like this and I actually picked them to win this series. I am shocked right now |

Isles are clogging the neutral zone. Pens can’t navigate the NZ and when they dump the puck in they are almost always out numbered in the corner. When they do win a puck battle the Isles are giving them the point shots because why not? No one is good out there except Letang and Schultz. Clog up the slot, take away the forwards time and space and force the Pens below average defensemen to beat them.
Pens went from firing the rubber 70 times in game 1 to under 50 times in games 2 and 3. Not a recipe for success and they’ve looked like dogpoop in the last 2 games whereas game 1 they looked solid. |

While you'd rather have Kessel shooting as opposed to Johnson or Gudbranson, you also need to take what the other team gives you. If they'll let the d fire shots from the point, then that's what you do. They don't have to be hard, they just need to get to the net for redirects or rebounds. Easier said that done, but if the Isles take away the slot, then fire away form the point...can't really do much worse. |
