Perhaps GMJR just isn't that good of a GM?
- Murphy_Dump

Never thought he was. He’s an average GM that makes a lot of moves. Some work. Some don’t. Thankfully for the Pens the ones that did work, worked sequentially and the Pens benefited from it. Now we’re seeing the opposite side of the spectrum.

Well....I think the Bjugs and McCann trade was very good. McCann missed game 2 and is probably playing with a bruised rib or ribs....not easy or fun.

That Bjugs line was looking great for a few weeks.....then they dont start the playoffs together...

Yeah they are a huge upgrade over Brassard and Sheehan.

Reeves, JJ, Hags for Pearson/Gubs all massively bad.

Well yeah. That was a good move but that happened after a string of bad moves. He’s just a gun slinger when it comes to trades. Quantity over quality. Take enough swings some are bound to connect. He had a lot of connects his first few years. And lately they’ve been down hill. I didn’t mean that every move recently has been dog poop but they have definitely deviated from what made the team success.

Oh I totally agree with all that and chuckled at he's a gun slinger. He really does fire off a lot of rounds (trades). Some hit the target, some miss.

Gubs is an interesting one. He came in after 3 of the top 4 D went down, played very solid and they strung together wins....are they in the playoffs without Guds? maybe but I cant say definitely.

Gudbranson has played solid but I don’t think he’s the type of player that matches the pens forwards. He’s not really a puck mover and that’s what the Pens need to succeed.

I agree....he was brought in because of a raging grit boner but what we didnt expect was how he solidified the back end for some wins...and there was a thin line this year if the Pens made it or not, took until game 81 to know for sure. If they dont get some of those wins then they're not even in the dance.....and maybe picking top 3 hahah ugh.

Its (frank)ing crazy that Gubs has more goals than Crosby in 4 playoff games.

The Reaves trade was the first move that showed the Pens going away from their identity.

Honestly, if they'd traded like a 3rd/4th rounder for him or signed him as a UFA, it's whatever.

The fact that they gave up a 1st rounder for him, though, was baffling.

Most people on here were either indifferent/happy when the Hags for Pearson trade was made.

While the return wasn’t good, it’s the team direction that trade signaled that was more troubling.

I don’t think having one dman like him in the lineup hurts this team’s ability to move the puck. They basically have a pooptier version of Gudbranson in JJ and BOTH are in the lineup; that’s what hurts this team on the backend IMO.

It’s when you have JJ, Pettersson, and Guddy in the lineup and a smart player like Olli in the press box, there’s a problem.

I just meant that when you have 3 bottom pairing defensemen on the roster and a top 4 defenseman in the press box, it’s a problem.

Olli should be in tomorrow night for a few reasons IMO.

I don’t mind Pettersson either. I don’t think he’s outstanding but he’s solid.

Maatta had a bad game, but you give your good players a chance to respond.

Dumo/Letang
Maatta/Schultz
Pett/Guds

This is a formidable backend if everyone is on their game. One that is capable of moving the puck.

You take Maatta out because of a stinker and have more trust in a dud, you have a two-sided problem.

Again, Torts is laughing right now.

Agreed....and I know the idea of players improving after a certain age has been beaten like a dead horse around here, both sides of the argument, but I do see room for improvement from that 22 year old rookie...even if only physically getting stronger, would make overall game improve.

I’m all about:

Maatta-Letang
Dumo-Schultz
Pettersson-Guddy

I don’t think Dumo is 100% and I’d rather limit his ice time.

Last couple games were the worst I’ve seen from Dumo in a very long time.

Good read about Simon if anyone’s interested.

- j.boyd919

It’s not that he’s a bad player he just isn’t what that line needs. Crosby needs help with the heavy lifting down low. As it stands you have Crosby first man to the puck every time, then he has to battle for the puck and by the time he wins it he’s double or triple teamed and dead tired. If someone could at least knock pucks free for Sid to scoop up it would be far more beneficial than having another handsy speedy player.
