This depends as well. Young guys are getting paid a lot these days. No doubt they are gonna be pushing for big pay raises. When guys like Marner and Matthews get 11 mill, Nylander getting 7 mill. Guy like Prov and Konecny will push for Nylander like money - xShoot4WarAmpsx
These guys will be signed prior to FA, so i guess time will tell. |

I just don't think adding one guy is going to break the cap. - ClaudeFather
Why is it one guy? Scott is on record saying he wants the Flyers to be a Cap team. That to me says they want to spend to the cap and go for it each year. |

They could be a cap team depending on what the costs are for our own RFAs.

Well MJL, add our re-signings and then $11M for Panarin. Probably close to the cap. |

The only thing I can say for sure is improved is the cap situation. Other then that I can't really say we are in a completely better spot. If prospects don't pan out were not any better situation and our core is aging.
If the game plan is still wait this out another couple years then why isn't the idea of moving Giroux for multiple picks and assets not brought up then.
I just feel this kicking the can down the road thing is going to back fire if your not making an effor to start moving some assets to push it forward. not saying i need to make some adam oates type deal but I think you can look for ways to give this a push. - J35Bacher
you wouldn't say that our goaltending situation this year and in the future, considering the prospects we have in our pipeline, isn't better? especially compared to past regimes who placed little to no resources in finding, identifying, drafting, and then developing goaltenders?
Going into this rebuild, or retool, or whatever you call it with Hexy, two of the things we needed desperately was a goalie of the future, and cap space. and Hexy did both. I also think this is the most important offseason for the flyers since the summer of 07, a lot is riding on what Fletch and Co. do. |

Your belief of still developing and drafting players will help this though. Infusing youth on this roster with a few vets, even UFA vets, would lead to a nice mix, not only the team but also on the cap. Having guys like Patrick, and Lindblom, and Myers, keep the cap down. And its a cycle that will continue. once these guys need contracts themselves, you will have other vets on the lineup have their contracts expire. additionally the cap has steadily risen over the last few years, and with two new expansion teams joining the league as well as the league reporting historic revenues across the league, we shouldn't see this slow any time soon. Thats what Fletch's job is, to manage this over the long haul so we can stay competitive and a contender not for just a few years, but over 6-10 years, before ultimately having to do it all over again. What makes this easier for some teams is their great ability to draft, a la the Red wings over the last 2 decades. |

We arent getting Panera Bread. Biggest move we will make is trading a Dman.
With:
Provorov
Sanheim
Gudas
Ghost
Myers
Morin
Hagg
Freidman - Likely AHL
AMac - AHL\Traded\BuyOut
And the fact they want to add a Vet D. It is pretty much guaranteed someone is gone. |

If the Flyers cannot contend this coming season, they should always be looking to push that process forward every year. Now waiting. Constantly drafting, developing and doing very little of anything else is just waiting.
In my opinion Claude Giroux is with the class of a Steven Stamkos, John Tavares and yes, even today’s Sidney Crosby. Giroux is a building block and we’re waiting the down side of his career right now and the last few years. When you have a Nolan Patrick, Travis Konecny, Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim, Carter Hart, Oskar Lindblom, Morgan Frost, Robert Hägg, Samuel Morin and your first round pick heading into the off season, you have room to make and trade and take risks. |

Does it look better...SUre. I hope it is. Hart looks like he could be the future. But Steve Mason had that same look for Columbus.
As much as I love what could be coming I still not sure its a guarantee.

I actually think i would prefer a guy like Brock Nelson. He could slid into the 2c position and let Patrick play the 3c.
I feel like if your going into the season with Voracek still here then you don't want to pay a big contract for Panarin or Duchene.
Depending on cost maybe take a lesser option like Dzingle who can do a couple things for you and brings speed. |

Im happy with AV. Look at our recent history, we had a lot of coaches with little to no experience as a head coach:
John Stevens
Berube
Hakstol
Gordon
Laviollette is the only guy we had since the Homer era that had pre-existing NHL head coaching experience. - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Hitch before Stevens. To add to your point, Hitch, Laviolette, Keenan and Shero might be the only great coaches we’ve had in our history. Terry Murray might be another. The point is, I think it’s best we stop testing the waters. |

It absolutely does work that way. I've posted on this many times previously. I think the idea of trying to push the timeline of how fast this team gets to where it needs to go is the wrong approach at this time. I want a team with a wide window of contention over a significant period of time. It's about timing. I don't feel the time is right to start and try to buy their way there in free agency. As far as trades, you should always be open to good smart trades. However I don't feel that trading youth for older players is the way to go at this time. In a year or two, the team will have a much better idea of what it's holes are and the what the finishing touches need to be. Still a lot of youth on this team including a 20 year old goaltender to think that it is a team that is close. Never know what might happen but I'm focused on what is the most likely path for this team. - MJL
can you define in your opinion what an older player is? |

I've been on board with Brock as well, what does he get on open market $6-$6.5? |

Probably. Kevin Hayes might get closer to 7 or maybe more. So probably around there |

7 million? For a 45 point player?
I’m not calling you out as being crazy, I’m just thinking to myself how expensive that is, like a restaurant serving me a 15 dollar bacon cheeseburger. I should have went to Burger King. |

Players are only on ELC deals for 3 years. When and if they reach their potential, they're going to need new contracts. The more quality players you draft and develop, the more cap space you'll need to re-sign those players. Signing multiple top UFA's can hinder that and limit flexibility. The best way to manage long haul is to draft and develop and limit big money UFA spending. |

Soo we are going to wait and see if our youth, when ready, can take us over the hump whenever that is. Great idea, now what happens if they can't? Should we continue to wait and develop? |

Also when i talk about trades to get better I am not just saying youth for older guys or vice versa.
Why can't we find a Niederreiter or Rask type of deal?
Something like Gostisbehere for Trocheck? Would that deal be even for both teams? Flyers get a 2nd line center, PK guy with good speed and plays a gritty game. Also can slide to wing if Frost is ever ready for a center role.
Both guys are 25 and on reasonable deals.
Those are the trades i think need to be explored. Not just youth and picks for a veteran but maybe swap one area for another.

He's going to probably be the top center available and coming off a deal where his cap hit was 5.125. I think it will be close to 7. He's 26 years old and can play all situations. Teams over pay in FA

Correct. So for a guy like Patrick next year, unless he breaks out, we could get him on a bridge, maybe a 2 year/4.5 mil contract. For Provy this year though, I would hope something like 6 years/48 mil. With a guy like Lindblom if his development arc stays the same, i could see something like 5 years/20 mil. However, a 2.5 mil AAV and a 4 mil AAV, allows for a big UFA or two. I'm not saying litter the team with UFA's, we don't need that many. But signing one or two, and maybe the second one isn't a large overpay, maybe its an under the radar signing, but either way I think there are several guys out there that will be signed to large contracts that can absolutely help this team immediately and fills immediate needs:
Panarin (bonafide scorer)
Duchene (solidify 2C)
Pavelski (solidify 2C or 1RW)
Edler (vet dman)
Nyquist (scorers ilk)
Kronwall (vet dman)
Jumbo Joe (2C)
I would only really break the bank for the top three, but all would help this team, albeit for the right price. Everything leads back to the right price.
