Would’ve taken a few ppl killing it to knock ROR off of PP1 though
Say what u want about faceoffs,
but he’s so much better than Jack or Sam or Mitts that he’d still be out there
Also, ROR was by far our best PP goal scorer last year
Some ppl say we wouldn’t have Skinner if we kept ROR,
but even if we did...
Okposo would’ve definitely been knocked off before ROR
And likely Sam too
Skinner-ROR-Mitts
Jack-Dahlin
And that’s IF Skinner was/is still here
And WHEN Mitts is finally lightning it up
Plus ROR is a really good 2way player
And it’s completely different when you’re keeping someone you have
VS
trading (most likely) good assets to get Karlsson
I suppose we could just trade Karlsson when Mitts gets good
But we could’ve done that with O’Reilly too! - jdfitz77
Dahlin replaced O’Reilly on the PP. And our PP got better this year despite losing his face off prowess

Shouldn’t the fat old man be the one to get most of the blame for leaving his wife? |

He's been the Gm of the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Atlanta Thrashers.
He was an assistant GM in Chicago when they were building their current dynasty...
Dude's been everywhere with extremely varied success. - BINGO!
Right...
But if he didn’t wanna come to BUFFALO,
then idk how u can assign blame to anyone but him? |

I kind of disagree on the rex front
he kept us in games
the new coach has lost twice as many game by 15 or more points in the same amount of time - homiedclown
Rex and whaley spent to the cap
Beane and McDermott are cleaning up the mess
Different playing fields.
Rex didnt make the playoffs though , mcd did despite the roster |

I thought rex did ok given the mess
he had a couple of decent o linemen
couple of good wr's
a stop gap qb
that d though, never should have brought his brother in with him |

He took the defense from Top5 to 20-ish...
and that was his SPECIALTY
Comparing Rex’s failure to other failures doesn’t make him a success
Just means he may not have sucked as bad
*also... the offense was destined to take a step back with a rookie qb, whether he was “ready” or not
Plus... didn’t our current coach actually get us to the playoffs???
That’s obviously more successful than Rex was |

I get it, you don't like Rex
IMO Rex inherited a really bad team that had an overachieving D due to the Lions guy we had running the D
there is a reason the dumbass bailed and went to jacksonville, he knew we were gonna stink |

A few things though:
1) he’s an RFA, so what do we have to trade to get him?
I highly doubt Vegas will just dump the guy cheaply. He still had a pretty good year
2) what’s it cost to sign him?
And does it make sense if we can just sign someone like Hayes for less and not have to give up anything in a trade?
3) where does he slot in 2 years from now, when Mitts has our 2C spit locked down?
And once Mitts starts taking away his offensive opportunities, how much will Karlsson’s numbers drop?
And will those numbers even come close to justifying the contract we’ll have to sign him to this summer?
Kinda seems like an idea I’d pass on when i consider all of the above questions
He only makes sense to me if:
-we trade for him cheap
-he’s willing to sign a reasonable contract
-we build our team with 3 scoring lines & a 4th line defensive unit
Idk if the 1st 2 things are a possibility? - jdfitz77
It would probably cost the other late 1st rounder and probably a prospect at least
I would think he would be a $6-$6.5 million per year player
I would either move Mitts to the wing or have him be the 3rd line center and roll 3 lines like back in 2006-2007
This team is lacking scoring depth so badly so why not roll out something like:
Skinner Eichel Olofsson
Nylander Karlsson Reinhart
Sheary Mitts Okposo
Wilson Sobotka Erod
and if Thompson shows up like a beast move Erod to center and sit Sobotka and move Okposo down to the 4th and put Thompson with Sheary and Mitts
Then in a two years if Mitts is ready for the 2C you move Karlsson in a trade of your keep him as your 3C

I’m not gonna let this become another bashing ROR debate
He’d be on our PP1 right now if we still had him
Dahlin replaces Risto on the PP,
NOT a forward who played up front
Good grief dude
And u skipped over a bunch of points i made to use one of them to take a shot at O’Reilly... AGAIN
Remind me...
who’s the one that can’t stop bringing him up? |

I believe he still lives in the area. He's frequently at Leafs or Sabres games. Rarely actually appears in Raleigh.
Dunno. Maybe he just likes having input but not having the actual spotlight on him now. |

Dahlin played on the right wall where ROR used to play, with Risto up top and Eichel on the left side. They then switched mid season and now Eichel is where ROR was and Risto in unit 2, Mitts on the left wall.

So u think it was that our defense was overachieving before Rex...
and that when Rex came in and changed systems that’s not what caused our defense to drop in effectiveness?
Idk what to say here Homie?
We are as far apart on that as we will ever be on anything
And for the record... i liked Rex and was excited about his hiring
But you or i could be a good defensive coach too if we had Ed Reed & Ray Lewis (etc etc)
He did a bad job
I was wrong about him |

When you have a top 5 (and even in one year, the top) defense in the league, and you come in and change it because of:
A) scheme
and, worst of all
B) ego
then you're a failure. |

I do love the idea of 3 “scoring” lines though
If a Karlsson trade cost us a 2nd + instead of the 1st,
then I’d probably be on board
I do like him as a player
But he’s probably a 60-ish point guy behind Jack, and not the 40goal scorer we saw last year |
