A few things though:

1) he’s an RFA, so what do we have to trade to get him?
I highly doubt Vegas will just dump the guy cheaply. He still had a pretty good year

2) what’s it cost to sign him?
And does it make sense if we can just sign someone like Hayes for less and not have to give up anything in a trade?

3) where does he slot in 2 years from now, when Mitts has our 2C spit locked down?
And once Mitts starts taking away his offensive opportunities, how much will Karlsson’s numbers drop?
And will those numbers even come close to justifying the contract we’ll have to sign him to this summer?

Kinda seems like an idea I’d pass on when i consider all of the above questions

He only makes sense to me if:
-we trade for him cheap
-he’s willing to sign a reasonable contract
-we build our team with 3 scoring lines & a 4th line defensive unit

Idk if the 1st 2 things are a possibility?

I feel like people (me) made this exact argument as a reason to move the 7.5 cap hit of O’Reilly’s

it's weird

shady can do no wrong

but kane and ror have to go

they are dealing with paid athletes, and the headaches are going to be there daily due to off the field stuff, it's not like a church league basketball team

and with the women's team, bandits, rochester, and all the other projects, you would think because they are so divided with all these ventures, they would have a hockey and football czar in place by now

you can only spread yourself so thin, especially when you are in florida more often then WNY

- homiedclown

At one point (though not while he was here), Shady might have been the best player at his position. Neither Kane nor ROR ever were, nor will they be.

Yes... that’s the guy i was thinking of that chose to go to MTL though, right?

So idk how we can blame the Pegulas for not hiring him?

Once GMTM was the hire,
I don’t remember many ppl being super p!ssed about the choice

I remember a lot of talk where we were all pretty much hopeful bc of his scouting background

"The local organizing committee that secured the bid to bring the Frozen Four to Buffalo included Pegula Sports and Entertainment and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, of which Canisius is a member.

Through a spokesman, Pegula Sports and Entertainment referred comment to the NCAA, regarding low attendance at the Frozen Four in Buffalo.

“We haven’t dove into all the reasons that might have impacted attendance yet,” Steve Metcalf, the NCAA’s Division I hockey committee chairman and deputy director of athletics at the University of New Hampshire, told the News Saturday, prior to the national championship game. “I think it’s probably due to a combination of different things. Everyone would have loved to see more people come to the games.”

Maher also said a post-mortem of the event will be done both by the NCAA and the local organizing committee in the next couple of weeks.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz theorized Sunday on Twitter why the event was a low draw: cost-prohibitive.

"When we made the pitch for the bid NCAA officials said so many people travel to attend it annually regardless of who was in the 4 that most tickets would be sold before. That wasn't the case. Price was an issue, so was poor Sabres season IMO hurting marketing and other things," he tweeted."

"The cost of tickets was also tied to the bid that the committee submitted to the NCAA in 2016 for Buffalo to serve as host. Potential tickets prices were included in Buffalo's bid to the NCAA in 2016, although the NCAA had to approve final ticket prices based on the recommendation of the local organizing committee, a spokesman said."

It's comments like this that really make me think a downtown stadium and/or new palace of an arena is pointless. This city really isn't big enough to host major events outside its local teams and maybe the 1st round of the NCAA's. The people here can't/won't afford it, and that won't change no matter how much we beat our chests about how loyal we are.

Fair point

Seems like they can’t find someone they trust to let run the teams for them

- jdfitz77

pat kirwan made a fair point when the bills fired rex

in short, the constant changes going on in the buffalo sports teams makes others aware of what is going on with the bills and sabres and why would anyone "proven known" go to that mess

the bills if they hold the line may very well shed that image, I am still not impressed with the coach but man that gm has done some great things since he cleaned up the mess

He was an assistant GM in Chicago when they were building their current dynasty...

- sbroads24

Would’ve taken a few ppl killing it to knock ROR off of PP1 though
Say what u want about faceoffs,
but he’s so much better than Jack or Sam or Mitts that he’d still be out there

Also, ROR was by far our best PP goal scorer last year

Some ppl say we wouldn’t have Skinner if we kept ROR,
but even if we did...
Okposo would’ve definitely been knocked off before ROR
And likely Sam too

Skinner-ROR-Mitts
Jack-Dahlin

And that’s IF Skinner was/is still here
And WHEN Mitts is finally lightning it up

Plus ROR is a really good 2way player

And it’s completely different when you’re keeping someone you have
VS
trading (most likely) good assets to get Karlsson

I suppose we could just trade Karlsson when Mitts gets good
But we could’ve done that with O’Reilly too!

They decided to use the money they would have spent on a new GM to hire him away from the Habs instead.

A bit weird, but can't really argue with the results so far.

Except the Skinner thing. That was bad.

Well then they have no choice but to hire 2nd tier guys
It’s not like they aren’t willing to pay top $$$

If guys want to pass us over to coach in Toronto, or LA, or take a front office job in Montreal...
well that’s a “Buffalo” issue seemingly,
and not a “Pegula” issue

The one “proven” guy we got (Rex)...
totally Fd up the defense & our team in General
So it’s not like getting “THE” guy is a sure fix anyways

I kind of disagree on the rex front

he kept us in games

the new coach has lost twice as many game by 15 or more points in the same amount of time
