I thought the profanity fit the anger of the fanbase, and the intelligent microcosm we have here on HB. People are still complaining about Murray's trades. - TheSabresTaco
Most of his trades did set this team back. |

Ready for a bullpoop alert?
Jeremy Roenick, probably Ek's favorite guy in the world, was on the Instigators yesterday, as he is every Wednesday. They were talking Pittsburgh and Malkin and how at 32 he should be done living in Crosby's shadow. Fans want him inexplicably traded, and how he had a "poopty" over ppg season. Guess which team Roenick suggested for Malkin.
The Kings. - TheSabresTaco
They have no money or space to trade for him. |

I don't agree with this part - adambuffalo
As in an effort standpoint? I thought the effort overall was so much better this year. |

And that's fine, but you have to do it the right way. Murray tried to load up with "good" and speed things up, and it was a colossal failure. He put the team in almost as bad a position as Regier did when tanking for Eichel, except Regier did it on purpose, which is really scary. - buffalofan19
We have a nice core, we need to compliment that this offseason with FA, Trades and the draft. We need to get in the playoffs this upcoming year... Just get in...

And this all comes a day after all the Pens sources claim that Pittsburgh said Crosby and Malkin were the only untouchables on the team. |

If a player like that becomes available, you figure out a way to make it work. |

Pens are old, moving Malkin and his Cap space makes a ton of sense business wise.. They need to get younger...

We have 2 core pieces.
Reinhart is somewhere between core and complimentary. Risto, once thought to be part of the core, is likely leaving. Mittelstadt has a long way to go before he can be considered part of the core. How many pieces is a core? 5?
If you want to include Reinhart, we're at 3/5 on the core. |

I believe using futures is fine, as long as the players you are bringing in fit in with the rest of your roster.
Bringing in ROR was fine, but the salary was heavy and the assets we had to give back was damaging. I feel as though that trade was made 3 years too early.
This is why I love the Montour trade. Giving up a late 1st and a D prospect that has been passed by others for a certainty in the top 4, matching the age and salary structure of the team.
These are some of the factors that need to be considered into these trades. Are you depleting your depth to the point of setting yourself back? Are you bringing in the right guys at the right time? What do their short and long term salaries look like? Botterill can see these things. Murray had no time for them. |

Right. It would need to be Malkin for a pair of garbage salaries. Then again, I wouldn't put it past JR. |

Kovalchuk and Phaneuf for Malkin and Jack Johnson
Only about $1m difference in total salary. Add picks or prospects to even it out on either side. |

it depends on the size of the Apple.. we have a small crappy apple so 2 sounds about right.. the good thing is that most likely neither of said core pieces have fully ripened |

32 isnt that old
Who would replace Malkin a 2c?
Maybe they draft a Casey mitts type guy and plug him right in. That seems to work.
I would think Malkin is off limits

Are you prodding me? Do you understand why I said what I said? Do you know that JR=Jeremy Rutherford, the GM of the Pens, would be roasted by the Pens fanbase for trading for Kovy and Dion for Malkin? |

Malkin will be 33 and is injury prone. His asset value has already begun to depreciate. Every season goes by, his value lessens. You either decide to make another run, or try to rapidly rebuild youth while Crosby is still great. |

I would be shocked if they traded malkin.
Good analogy with the deprecation component
I think that its past the deprecation point though. Kinda like a car with over 100,000 miles.
You could have sold it with 60,000 miles left for some $
Over 100,000 you drive it until its worthless

The Colorado Avalanche had 48 points two years ago, and 82 points the year before (the first season without ROR)
Last year 95 points and 90 this year.
I see the Sabres in a similar situation. Trading ROR lead to a short term loss, however it helped long term. The two main pieces that the AVs have from the trade are Zadorov and Compher. Sabres main pieces are Thompson and Montour.
I feel like the Sabres are in a better position going into next season than the Avs were after they traded ROR and hopefully in the end Thompson/Montour >>>> Compher/Zadarov.
Sign Skinner, hire a coach (Grönborg or Crawford hopefully), shed some deadweight if possible and bring in a 2C (Hayes for $6m). We are a lot closer to taking the next step than people feel. The NHL isn't like the NFL when it comes to shedding bad contracts, so it takes a bit longer, but we are close to being free from the anchors preventing big moves. Botts inherited a mess and deserves the chance to build the team in his own vision before being run out of town like so many "fans" like to do.

Kind of a wash IMO. He was roasted for signing JJ and many believe they are stuck with him now for the rest of his contract. So being able to shed JJ may ease some of the pain of losing Malkin. |

I can't get on board with that. Signing a crappy free agent is one thing. Sending one of the best players in your franchise's history in place of a washed up Kovy and slow ass Dion is a whole other can of olives.
Theoretically, if all 3 of these pieces are involved, I fully expect LA to empty out their barren cupboards and give the Pens their 2019 late 1st, next year's protected 1st, Alex Iafallo and Rasmus Kupari.
Seeing as the Kings are an old pile of poop, that will never happen. Lest Rob Blake wants to be fired immediately. |

Jack Johnson for $5 =/= Kovy for $6.25 imo
It's a late first to take Kovy - he has negative value
Johnson and Phaneuf wash
For Malkin:
A high 1st plus a young rostered center - Kempe
A grade A prospect
So #5 + leafs pick, Kovy, Phaneuf, Kempe for Malkin and Johnson
Taking Kovy out of the trade saves their late first |
