These songs have been out there in the ether for decades....why now did these franchises make these decisions?

C'mon, don't you want to have the song "Pickaninny Heaven" whitesplained to you again?

Yes I do. To remove a part of Flyers tradition and someone that was admired in Philadelphia because of "possible" racism in the 1930's.... 40 some years before she was linked to the team and before the civil rights movement that opened people's eyes is overreaction.

If you can show me that she was personally a racist or bigot until they day she died or she was during the time she worked with the Flyers organization then fine take it down.

But this is a witch hunt. You can't go back 60 years and call someone a sexist because something that happened 60 years ago would be considered sexual harassment now. There were different values and standards back then. If the person still does it, yes bad person, if not they learned this wasn't right and fixed themselves.

What really gets me is this should be a fan choice. If the fans want the statue down and the song to stop they will let the organization know. Flyers history does not belong to the Flyers. It belongs to all of us.

I was really upset how they are handling the Shawny situation and this is pushing it over the edge.

If anyone feels the need to be offended there is plenty of current events to be offended over. How about we leave what happened almost 100 years ago in the past.

Studies by who? Liberals? Lefties are all about emotion. Don’t even get this started.

Perhaps broadly saying more logical was an oversimplification. We think differently, that’s for sure. An interesting read:
https://www.scientificame...ing-truce-political-wars/

Consider that the majority of doctors, scientists, mathematicians, you know the people who use logic to thrive professionally are liberal. There are many highly logical people on the left.

My broader point is that you tend not to hear from those liberals often. The ones who spend their time screaming about a statue of long deceased racist are likely not the most logically gifted amongst us and do not represent the left as a whole.

Something like this is nuanced. Unfortunately the most prolific ways to have your opinion heard on the internet don’t lend themselves well to nuanced takes.

I don’t think anywhere close to the majority of liberals are weighing in on the Kate Smith situation. I’m sure the same can be said of conservatives. I think we mostly hear from a loud minority on both sides. We really need to keep that in mind and stop assuming the nature of half our population based on the narrow views of a small faction with nothing better to do than complain about the existence or potential nonexistence of a deceased racist pop singers statue.

Didn't mean to be pissy/disrespectful.

I apologize, but have a big problem when people 'punch down' so to speak.

The fact that people get offended at the scrutiny of offensive things towards groups unlike themselves is bizarre and dumb.

Let's all move on! Minus that stupid statue.

That would be fantastic, obviously. This year's playoffs have been a lot of fun to watch, even without the Flyers.

The most "intelligent" people don't always offer the best solutions. Often "intelligent" people gives their view and because they are so smart people just "bow" to their wisdom. Sometimes we have to realize good ideas can have terrible effects.

In others words, sometimes you need a Kirk, not a Spock.

No question. Really looking forward to next season, though. With the right personnel moves and AV pushing the right buttons, I think this team can turn it around quickly.

I think a lot depends on how gutty Fletch is. The slow Hextall approach got us nowhere. The constant mediocrity wears on me more than a full swoon

Absolutely. It takes a village and there are many different types of intelligences. You can’t build a team 100% made of Voraceks. Or JVRs. Maybe not even Couturiers. But put the 3 together and you’ve got a decently balanced line.

I work with inner city kids and adults, and over the years, I have had frequent discussions with all of them about the struggles they face daily. I realize though listening to them that my experience as a white person with racism is VASTLY different to minorities.

Racism is not just burning crosses. Racism is how cops treat black people. Racism is our justice system unfairly biased against people of color. Racism does not have to be obvious to be felt. It's impossible to just wash away racism when it is ingrained in our society from hundreds of years ago. Are things getting better? Yes, obviously. But we still have a long way to go.

I'm not going to educate you on these issues, because like I said, you are blissfully ignorant of its effects on society while not being in plain view. That is not your fault, that's just what happens growing up white a lot of times. All I will say is seek out opinions, views, and information from people that actually experience racism daily and you might be surprised what you find.

It's impossible to eradicate racism when some are ignorant of it.

From our own government. https://www.ojjdp.gov/ojs...ace&year=2015&percent=row

Now you could say, "Well they must commit more crime, they should just stop." Well, then they should be given good schools/education, support, etc. that whites have received for the history of this country. When you live in poverty, and the system is stacked against you, many fall through the cracks.

I dare you to volunteer in a high poverty area and see what is going on. See for yourself, because you obviously have no idea the stuff that has been going on and continues to go on in this country.

Ignorance helps keep it going. If you want it to stop, do your part and find out for yourself.
