Why are we holding people that are dead to standards that didn't exist back then. When is it going to be too much? Are we going to tear down the Ed Snider statue because he was friends with Ayn Rand?
It would be different if she was alive and still singing the song. My grandfather was racist. He now has a biracial granddaughter and loves her to death. People change as society changes.
It was the 1930s FFS.
If the Flyers do one more stupid decision like Firing Shawney or apologizing because Ed Snider was friends with Ayn Rand I'm done. I will not be a willing participant of an organization that reacts and apologies every time someone overreacts.
I almost want to protest this by standing by the statue and not letting them tear it down. - youarewrong

I say we ban the cup winning Flyers teams because they disgracefully intimidated opposing players verbally and by force. I'm offended. Take the banners down. - youarewrong

Everybody's grandparents were racist. Heck, my pop pop hated certain white Europeans. |

@Drmidnite
Should we take down all of the statues of George Washington because he owned slaves? Or Abraham Lincoln, who famously wanted to send Black Americans back to Africa.
You can't hold people from the past to the same standards we hold people to today. Times and opinions change. - bulet13
It was ok to hold hundreds of slaves captive in the 1800s. It was not ok to write satirical songs about racism along with another black person in the 1930s. As flyer fans we can draw the line |

Exactly. If she were still alive and could apologize for her part in that history, I would be fine with keeping the song and the statue. But this is one of those times when an executive decision had to be made. Why should the flyers be responsible for educating people about racism in the u.s. during the 1940’s just so they can play a song that isn’t the national anthem when the national anthem is supposed to be played. - Shrike
This guy gets it. |

No you don't realize the difference. First, you didn't take the context of the song into account. Second, you have no idea if her opinions or not changed. You're just assuming she stayed racist her whole life, if she was in fact ever racist.
I understand why the Flyers did it. They're worried it's bad for business. But the fact that they think it's bad for business means people actually care what a long dead lady may have thought in the 30s has an impact on their ability to support a (frank)ing sports team. Which is absurd - bulet13
Couldn't agree more. This is a pussied down organization now. It fits right in with the rest of the country of (franking) cry babies.
People love to throw the racism word around. It gives them spotlight for 15 seconds.
They will never end racism but most adults grow up and get over skin color as they mature.
Society has changed.... dont judge people from different time periods because things were very different back then |

Last Exception:
Bill Meltzer should be embarrassed with this response from his base of readers.
Honestly, so the statue goes down?
Everyone's lives are forever altered?
We cannot distance ourselves from our awful past or current president. But we can try and reconcile.
And a team can choose who they want to represent themselves.
Those songs are awful, product of 'bigotry is cool or not.
AND not EVERYONE thought that way.
Once again. Embarrassing awful views here today. |

You don't win a prize for acting the most offended. Grow up. No one here supports racism or likes the fact that she wrote the song. We just don't think it's reason to remover her from existence.
Congrats on feeding into outrage culture. |

They should just replace anthems w/ a 5-min long clip of a baby wailing. That'll teach em! All of em! |

Every person who gets upset about this stuff. It doesnt affect their lives but they act like it does.
People are just cry babies in general in this country now. Everyone is sooooo offended by everything and its ridiculous and unnecessary. It just continies to stir up hate and division in this country and we already have enough of that |

MICHELLE OBAMA: "Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices; we are going to have to change our conversation; we're going to have to change our traditions, our history; we're going to have to move into a different place as a nation."
Why would anyone want to change history? When you change history you evolve into a totalitarian state or culture.
History is history and should be taught factually good and bad.
Why should we change traditions? Like Christmas because people are offended? Or you can’t paint police cars with the star and stripes because people might get scared?
Instead let’s ban everything we don’t like or something that is associated with person we don’t like.
In fact capitalism is rascist ban it, the constitution is racist and so were the creators so ban it.
Never mind what the facts and history actually teach us.
Yet on the other hand let’s celebrate planned parenthood because Margerat Sanger was a gem and saint.
How does this equate to the Flyers or the Yankees? I would ask why the Kate Smith version of God Bless America was used.
Because they endorse what may have been a satirical or rascist song or because of the song itself?
Chick fil a stood their ground on their beliefs and I would argue it actually helped their business.
How many movies, songs, books should we ban? SJW will never stop and will never be happy because there is and never will be a world where everything is perfect.

It's easy to get outraged by something that occurred almost a century ago. It's harder to actually to try to fix those issues, and get to the root of the problem. Often it seems like the people who get the most offended don't really care about fixing the issues. They just want to hop on a moral high ground |

I don't think it really would be as big an issue if Kate Smith was just a part of Flyers' history and not brought out when any "important" game came out. As some people said, a lot of famous/important people had racist pasts.
However, she is still a part of the Flyers franchise today, or at least was. That is the difference between what some people used as examples and this situation. Any appearance of the approval or ignoring of what she sang by still playing her music is not something anyone should be OK with in this day in age, when racism is still alive and well everywhere.
I think it's ok to err on the side of caution. As a white person, I can get over a (frank)ing statue and song not being around anymore, because what a whiny (frank)ing poop I would be if I got upset over that, compared to people that have been affected by racism in the past and still today. |

Just like Chris Rock said.
When someone says "Listen. I'm not racist, but..."
"You're about to hear the most racist s**t ever."
Because it's true. And you don't even know. And it is a big problem. |

Yeah it's pretty fascist. No reason the national anthem has to be played before every high school swim meet.
Also the writer was probably a racist so let's ban it regardless |

What are you doing to help the issue?
Besides telling others to grow up?
WHY are people upset? Care much?
If you do, do you care more than that stupid recording or stupid statue? Which shouldnt have been there anyway? |

Exactly what this guy is saying! Drmidnite (who is on my is 4th very last post forever now) is so butthurt over something like this. Hes just part of 'merika and feeds the cry baby culture
Wanna know a secret? Drmidnite will post again because he can't stop... he loves the attention of being part of crybaby USA. Hes making a difference!
This is what keeps racism alive! The needless arguing over things we cant change and that dont affect our lives.
It gets old. 100 years ago everyone was racist. Let's keep the statues as a reminder of what not to do anymore
Like Elsa said "let it go " |
