This seems like an even better scenario for the Isles. They can sign Lehner long term and have the Greiss/Lehner tandem next year again.. then the following year when Sorokin is done Greiss will only have 1 year left on his deal (correct?). Can easily move him that summer if they are both playing at same level.

Of course, the wild card in all of this will be the Islanders, who are one of the surviving eight teams to get to the second round. GM Lou Lamoriello has $31.7 million in projected cap space to play with, but also five forwards on expiring contracts (Jordan Eberle, Anders Lee, Brock Nelson, Val Filppula and Tom Kuhnhackl), all of whom contributed on some level to both their excellent regular-season results and the first-round win over the Penguins. You can assume that attempts will be made to retain most of the above, but it would still leave the Islanders in a position to make a splash, if they chose to do so.

Presumably, when these wildly unpredictable playoffs end, we will see if such a thing is even necessary for the Islanders.

What does Calgary do with four more years of James Neal at $5.75 million? What do the Islanders do with four more years of Andrew Ladd at $5.5 million? Can you swap Neal’s contract for Ladd’s, and if you could, would you want to? Ladd has no-trade protection; Neal doesn’t.

Ladd has ties to Calgary, dating back to his junior days, and while Neal arrived in Nashville the summer after Barry Trotz left, you can be sure Trotz has enough knowledge of his strengths and weaknesses to perhaps sign off on the deal if the respective GMs could ever come to terms on it. I firmly do believe that sometimes, if it isn’t working in one place, giving a player a chance to start fresh somewhere else is almost always worth a shot
